Question:

Does anyone else get annoyed when sports fans are talking about their teams accomplishments using the term we?

I always though it was funny because as fans we do not do any of the feats, we just witness them. I understand that fans play a part in the game, but most the people watching sports see them on TV anyway so their support is actually pretty irrelevant to the outcome of the game. I also find it interesting that no one ever uses we or us when talking about their team losing.

  1. I agree w/ Joe. I admit I use it every now and then, but I know hockey too. I liken it to "our city" as a representation of the whole area. i lived in the suburbs of Detroit until just this past Feb, and always call home Detroit and our teams ours/mine

"WE" will win the cup tonight, as a collective city and displaced Red Wing fans across the country and world

  2. ya, i do, because they are not on the team so they shouldnt make it seem like they are

  3. That doesn't bother me in fact I might even do it and I say we lost last night so I do it for both sides. What BOTHERS me when people have no idea what a puck is or a blueline but see were in the Conference Finals so the bandwagonners say "Hey We did great last night".People..Stop the madness!

  4. well not really. I am a canucks fan and i always say "we"

Maybe thats because i am a canuck

  5. "We" don't mind!!!

  6. Sometimes.  I try not to, but sometimes its just easier to say we than type out something more.  This is the age of text messaging... what do you expect.  They aren't really saying they are a part of it, its just easier to type out.

But point taken... I won't do it.

  7. NO. because i use the term. And if you dont your not really a fan of the team you speak of.

The fans are what makes the team. even watching at home... they buy merchandise they keep the team afloat. If a team has no fans then the team will be relocated.

  8. yes, we do.

  9. Yeah I say it all the time even though I get annoyed when other people say it.

I called my hockey coach out on that about a year. He played hockey at Ohio State so he is obsessed with their football team. Last year when Michigan was about to play Ohio State he kept on reffering their football team to "we" and trying to rip on U of M, so I came back with "what do you mean 'we'? You aren't on the team..." and the whole locker room started cracking up....

....then I had to do ladders all practice.

  10. It's one thing when the members of the team use the term "we" because they should -- every success or failure of a team rests on each team member -- but you're right about sports fans talking about their team's accomplishments using the term "we."  The fans have very little influence over how well (or how lousy) their team plays.  Home-field advantage makes up less than 1% of the equation.
