Question:

Does anyone else get heart palpitations from talking on the phone or speaking at meetings? ?

I'm starting to worry that my fear of public speaking might actually be a more generalized fear of speaking to strangers (or acquaintances) on the phone, at meetings, in the classroom, or whatever. I need to know if anyone else gets nervous every time they raise their hand or dial a phone number, or if I should pursue help. It's not that I won't speak but I avoid it where I can.

  1. Sounds like a anxiety attack. Usually the fear of something happening causes these attacks. Tell yourself, "There is nothing to fear but fear it's self'. Try this for while and if that doesn't work seek council. Your not alone, millions of people suffer from this condition. Good lock.

  2. I would speak to a coucelor re: this.  I am like that all the time.  I have an anxiety disorder.  It's normal there are millions of people who feel this way.  I have been getting upset stomachs because I keep thinking about the wedding I am standing up in.  This is my first wedding besides my own, and I am freaking out about it.  I don't like to be in front of a whole bunch of strangers, it freaks me out.  I would talk to somebody, it helps out a lot.

  3. Whenever I know i have to go somewhere, or am about to make a call, my heart races. Not just when I raise my hand in the classroom, my heart races before that. whenever I want to raise my hand to say something it races, so I won't raise my hand, but then I force myself, and I say what I was going to say but then feel like sticking my head in a whole, like I've said something completely moronic. Sometimes time heals that feeling, but often not towards the end of the school year, when it no longer matters because summer has arrived and the whole process is about to repeat with a new year. After I get to know everyone, I'm fine. I know they won't think I'm dumb, or I don't care.

still, speaking on the phone with a racing heart proves difficult.

I went to the doctor and they gave me Atenolol because my heart was racing there. Cause I knew they would be taking my blood...

You just have to through yourself into it. Keep telling yourself that you're fine, take deep breaths, and wait for your heart to slow back to regular.

    Good luck...

  4. It is not in the nature of the majority to speak in public  Nervousness, to a degree, can be useful as not to become over confident. May I suggest a few deep breaths and speak in a slightly pitch than you would normally. Why? Your throat constricts when you're nervous and so your voice becomes higher pitched.Pause before speaking. A few seconds pause will seem like hours to you at the time but to an audience or someone on the phone, it's no time at all. Those couple of seconds will allow you you to gather your thoughts and do that breathing.Speak slower than you think you should. You will probably then be speaking "normal speed" . If it is a two way conversation remember you have two ears and one mouth. Use them it that order. Listen to what is being said. Never worry about not having the answer straight away. If they are really interested in your views or whatever, they will allow you time to think or even research the answer. Hope this helps.
