Question:

Does anyone else get "punished" for paying child support responsibly? ?

I've been fighting financial aid at school all summer long. My husband has his HR direct deposit a certain amount into his ex-wifes checking account every pay day, and the rest into his account. He has been doing this for almost the whole 10 years they've been divorced.

My financial aid says that I HAVE to have PROOF he pays child support in order to complete my fin aid application, either with ORS statements, or copies of the checks he's written out. We don't have either, and they only accept those two forms- period. They will not accept a letter from his ex, because for one, it's not proof, and two, it "causes problems between divorced couples." She would have no problem writing out something for me, but they wont accept it-- because "What IF" she makes a claim later that she hasn't gotten anything? (She's a responsible adult, and wouldn't do that.....)

As it stands now, I have no grants but I'm border-line to the income limit. If I show "proof" I may be able to get a grant. Not only does he pay, on time, but he pays extra!!! Yet it doesn't matter....

  1. Very simple - obtain copies of the checks from your husbands bank where he holds the account.

  2. Welcome to the world of marrying a man with children from a previous relationship. His problems become yours even though they are not your children. Unless you can prove the child support you are SOL.

  3. Have your hubby go to his HR department and get the information from them. They have all the records. Where it's going, to whom it's going, and how much. They should be able to help you.

  4. I think his bank statements must show he pays responsibly. This has to be a proof.  Good luck.

  5. His check stub should show it.

  6. this is not "punishment". The same rule applies if you were to apply for a home loan and are a recipient of child support outside of the courts. If you don't have legal proof, you cannot count it as income. Have your husband get an order for whatever he and his ex agree on as payment and go from there.
