We all know one. Just someone who is obsessed with Japan a little to much, and thinks anime, manga, and dramas play a big part in Japanese culture. Inno I like learning Japanese, but it attracts a... loser group. Does anyone else feel this way?

  1. YES! Actually, I am Japanese but I'm not into the whole anime and manga stuff. Those ppl who r into it who wear those costumes are just plain weird........

  2. I wouldn't say it's a loser group.

If you say that, then you'd be calling... a million and possibly more people that you don't know "losers".

I understand you if you mean that they would ditch their own culture for the japanese culture just because of the anime they watch or the manga they read. That's kind of odd.

Cosplaying is also odd, but I always think of it as a prolonged Halloween celebration. You see some pretty neat outfits in those conventions.

Additionally: At least, I think they do play a big role in culture. They show Japanese lifestyle in different, entertaining ways.

Just try to ignore them, if it really bothers you. =D I don't think I'm a loser just because I'm interested in Japanese culture in more ways than someone else is. Anime and manga is quite epic. They come up with some of the wildest storylines. That's what makes it interesting.

So, we're not all losers. I don't think I'm a loser, at least.

Remember: "'Freak' is just another word for 'misunderstood.'" :D

  3. I don't hate it-but obviously anyone who thinks comic books are all there is to Japanese culture is kind of sad. I say drop your Berzerk for a bit and try out some Murakami Haruki or Nagisa Oshima for a bit. The future of Japanese culture may not be with the Japanese-there are young Westerners who go to Japan and study Noh or Bunraku, while most young Japanese don't care about such things.

I took a course in Japanese cinema last year and thus saw "Spirited Away" for about the third time.

It's not a bad film-but I kind of felt the prof who was much more familiar with the likes of Ozu and Kurosawa was just pandering to a bunch of vapid undergrads who wouldn't sit still for Ozu. As for myself I'm off the the Nikkatsu 1960s action film festival tonight. Joe Shishido rocks!

  4. You mean おたく (otaku)?

I really do not like them because they give people like me who have a REAL interest in Japan (that did not start due to love/obsession with anime, manga, video games, sushi, or other stereotypical Japanese things) a very bad name. Japan is so much more than just that, but it seems like everybody wants to jump on the bandwagon and go to Japan because they think it is an exotic fantasy land. They know very little (if anything) about the language or the culture, and they act very "American," frequenting very common areas like Tokyo while completely ignoring the real cultural centers like Kyoto. When they realize that Japan is not all about fun and games, they become very confused and upset. The truth is, the Japanese will always see foreigners just as foreigners, and this has many implications (some good, some bad) that most Americans with an average interest in Japan may not want to deal with.

I have to respect them because it is their interest and I have no reason to stereotype them due to that, but I have heard stories over and over of this happening. When I say I want to major in Japanese language and literature, I get lots of funny looks and many people think I am just going because I want to watch anime and play video games. Those things aren't bad, but as I said, Japan means so much more than that to me, and I consider it very insulting when that's all some Americans credit Japan for doing.

The people I most respect are those who learn extensively about the language and culture. Some of those people like anime and manga, but they are the ones that really love Japan and aren't like the misinformed masses.

  5. Im a Japanese art student and study in UK.

It's good question I think. Because as you said also some of Japanese think the people who are interested in anime or manga ate strange.

But to think about our old art works, there is a origin of manga around 1600 (Edo era) so it connected with Japanese art history. I consider them are very nice and feel happy if someone is curious for. Do you know one of Uni in Japan set the manga department recently.

Maybe one of the misunderstood is, manga (or anime) which were imported into US or UK are tend to be fixed. So sometimes I feel really disappointed with it. There are a lot of GOOD quality of them are not exported from Japan! (In this case "GOOD" is subjective opinion-like different atmosphere of manga which expressed social problems and so on compared with heretofore.) For example, "Homunculus" is really interesting approach for the recent viewer. I'll put URL.

Manga is not only like entertainment for killing time, hope many people have interest for it!!
