Question:

Does anyone else have a Scientific Atlantic Explorer 8300 HDC and thinks it is a piece of garbage?

I used to have a (non HD) TiVo and it was the most amazing, life-changing device since the safety razor. When I upgraded to HDTV, I didn't want to lay out the cash for a new, HD TiVo, so I got the SciAtl 8300 HDC from Time Warner.

I am on my third unit. I have to reboot the thing AT LEAST once a day, or it starts to act buggy. It refuses to fast forward about 10% of the time, it takes forever to respond to remote commands, and the remote looks like it was designed by a blind, sadistic midget with mini-fingers.

Of course, Time Warner doesn't offer any other unit.

Your thoughts?

  1. Hi A Baby,

If I were you I would get a TiVo or if you want to avoid a monthly fee get a Philips DVR. The one I like is the Philips DVD Recorder w/ 160 GB DVR, DVDR3455/37.

There is no monthly fee. You program it by time & channel.
