Question:

Does anyone else have a problem reading to their baby?

My 6 month old son seems to get very impatient when I try to read to him. He cries, squirms, and tries to grab the book. I don't mind the squirming and grabbing, but the crying makes it virtually impossible. Anyone else have this happen?

  1. Reading time at this age is not so much about getting your baby to sit still and listen to a story they can't understand. Imagine how bored you'd get if someone was reading you a book in a language you couldn't understand.

At this age, it is about getting your child used to seeing and touching and playing with books. Yes...you want to read them too so they know what they are for but a bit of sucking and chewing is fine too.

I lay in the floor with my daughter when we read a book. We both lay on our backs and I hold the book up. I talk about the pictures rather than read the words and if she grabs the book, I let her take it for a minute before I take it back.

If your son is crying he is obviously not enjoying himself for whatever reason so you should not push it at that time or he will just end up hating books

    Good luck

  2. my son doesnt cry, but he does squirm and trys to grab the book.

i still read to him though. its important.

  3. my daughter does the same thing. she does not seem to be interested at all. she is 7 months

  4. i did, i chose more colorful books, had him sit in my lap and read it to him so he could see the pictures and pointed out as i was reading, it seemed to help.

  5. You can either read to them while they are playing or just skip it until they are old enough to be interested.

I didn't read to my son at all until he showed an interest.  However I read CONSTANTLY.  So he is obsessed with books.  He's known all his letters since he was 2 (except lower case L he thinks is I).   He isn't even 2 and a half and can read over 20 words.
