I mean stuff like schizophrenia, bi polar, multi personailties, depression and ADHD expecially. I really think they are just highs and lows of ones life misinterprited as 'crazy' or people just give the patient meds because no one wants to take the time to teach them to get past it. I do know that there are serious cases in which means chemical imbalance but I still think when it gets down to it there's a way for people like that to get passed it without medication. Anyone out there believe that other then me?

  1. You obviously haven't suffered through any of the above.

  2. No, I dont believe you.  I do think behavioral disorders are massively overdiagnosed, but I do believe there are true mental disorders.

When you witness somebody talking to invisible cameras in the corner of a room, you will believe it.

  3. Can people just "get past" physical disabilities if they work hard enough at it????  It's the same for mental disorders!

The problem is that people are uneducated about about this and think that those suffering have a personal choice to overcome it... not true!

As for the overdiagnosis of some disorders (like ADHD), there are SOME parents who are too lazy to work with their children to modify minor behavioral problems, and look for the 'quick-fix' solution.... but, this doesn't discount the fact that there are MANY children who indeed need treatment and/or medication in order to function successfully in school and life to allow them to reach their highest potential.

  4. I believe many of those conditions are mis-diagnosed and/or over-diagnosed (due to the way they are defined in the official medical reference book).   They do exist, and people who have them need proper treatment.

ADHD is a favorite one that practitioners like to throw medication at to manage.   A patient and dedicated parent of an ADHD child can learn to manage the condition without meds if they are so motivated.

  5. I would have to say I do truly believe some people have mental disorders but I also believe in many cases such as ADHD it is misdiagnosed or over-diagnosed. My number one believe is that many people with mental disorders are wrongly diagnosed or over medicated.

  6. Whether or not there are non-medical treatments does not change whether or not the condition exists or not (which is what your question was asking).

Many of these conditions are misdiagnosed to begin with, in particular depression and ADHD...

  7. If you don't have any mental disorders, how could you possibly have a valid opinion.  Of course there are millions of sufferers of mental and emotional disorders and they are as real as real gets.  I've been fighting my own problems for years, and I finally found the right medication.  If one finds a medication that works, what could possible be wrong with taking it.  Stick to what you know and omit your opinion about things you know nothing about.

  8. I'm sorry, you seem ill-informed. I don't see how hallucinations, or delusions of schizophrenia could be interpreted as a high or low. Exactly how would that cause you to believe you are Napoleon? (This, and stranger things, do happen to schizophrenics). Also, we can trace the neurological and chemical and genetic causes of all these. You can get through things without medication. As you can get through many other illness without medication. Like cholera, or measles. People used too - not all sucessfully (check suicide rates of people who come off meds too early) You CAN get through without medication - but when it helps and we know how and why, why should you - these illnesses are not minor nuisences, they are chacatorised by how the impair functioning and utterly disrupt your life. Don't confuse them with non-clinical and normal varieties (like bad attention or depression rather than depression disorder) it's not the same.
