  1. i also dislike the widescreen format but you can zoom in so the black won't take up 2/3 of your tv. also most tvs that are being made are being made in the widescreen format, like vizio, sharp and other brands so the black goes away and you get the whole picture, not the portion with the sides chopped off.

  2. I dont like the bars, however the movies I watch are old panavision films, these films are in wide screen to capture the scope of the original threatrical releases

  3. absolutely :P

  4. No, widescreen films are better.  Full screen dvds cut off a significant portion of the sides of the screen. Whereas wide screen DVDs do not cut off any part of the original picture from the side OR THE TOP/BOTTOM.  Just b/c their are black lines at the top of the bottom does not mean its cutting off the picture.

Widescreen DVDs ar how the movie is intended to be seen and how it is shown in theaters.  Full screen DVDs are bastardized versions of the film that do not faithfully depict the filmmakers' vision of the movie.  You would be surprised how much is missed by cutting off a few inches off the sides. Its not how it is supposed to be viewed.  Full screen DVDs should not even exist.

And seriously, you have a 67" inch TV, does an inch or two of black lines really make the movie smaller enough to complain so much about it?

  5. yep. I hate them too. Can't see the point whatsoever.

  6. I actually used to dislike widescreen until a film student friend told me that full screen is basically the ends of the widescreen picture chopped off and then the middle part that's left is blown up to fit the screen. I agree the bars are annoying, but you get to see the movie the way the director intended it and none of the picture is cut off.

  7. I like the full-screen versions better!

  8. Yeah, it sucks.  I think they're doing it to prepare for a re-standardization.  You know how all antennas are being replaced by cable?  Supposedly all regular TVs are going to be replaced by wide screen televisions, so then those movies would fit perfectly on those TVs.  Maybe they're doing that to save money so they don't have to reformat a movie after they show it in theater.  It will already be ready for your TV.

  9. i love widescreen, almost all my dvds are widescreen
