are not necessary for us in life. why do we need them, they only make our feet fragile and sensitive. shoes and socks make our feet suffer and we wear them all the time. lets face it, going barefoot is what makes our feet strong amd we adapt to the feeling of rocks or snow. does anyone else think that footwear is not a necessity.

  1. I think footwear is absolutely necessary.

Think of all the things that may wound your feet when you walk bear footed...

Think of all the nasty things you may step on…

Think of how it would be impossible to walk on the pavement in summer because you will end up burning your feet...

Think of how your toes will freeze in winter...

But what I don't understand is with such high importance of shoes, how come 98-99% of those in the market are not comfy??? (especially women's shoes)

  2. Footwear is definitly NOT necessary, and actually according to medical studies a hinderance. In general, being barefoot promotes healthy development of musculature in the feet and legs, while excessive reliance on shoes tends to promote atrophy and weakness in those same muscles. This suggests that overdependency on shoes can have serious consequences. A study published in the September 2006 issue of Arthritis and Rheumatism found that “modern shoes may exacerbate the abnormal mechanics of lower-extremity osteoarthritis.”  Researchers concluded that maybe it was time to re-evaluate our daily walking programs,

presumably to include time for walking barefoot.

In many parts of the world, reflexology paths and “barefoot parks” offer feet a chance to experience varieties of textured surfaces. In addition to biomechanical advantages of regular barefoot exercising, many holistic health practitioners believe the tactile stimulation underfoot while walking barefoot on natural surfaces has positive effects on body, mind and spirit.

Walking barefoot is also a good way to avoid athlete’s foot. Contrary to a widely believed myth, it is not the sole-to-ground contact that presents a risk so much as it is feet going back into the moist, dark, warm environment found inside shoes. Closed-toe shoes especially are ideal incubators for fungi and bacteria to live and breed. Allowing the feet to “breathe” also prevents foot odor.

“And forget not that the Earth delights to feel your bare feet and the winds long to play with your hair.”            Kahlil Gibran

  3. There are situations where shoes and socks are necessary.  My job requires that I wear steel toed boots for safety reasons, for instance.  90% of the rest of the time closed shoes aren't necessary, but I usually stick to sandals for most situations, now that it's more acceptable for men to wear them.  Flip-flops for around town and sport sandals for fishing, driving, or days that involve a lot of walking.  At the house Im always barefoot.  Outside in the winter, I still prefer sneakers, and winter months are about the only time I wear closed shoes outside of work.

I do believe that wearing shoes all the time causes a lot of problems.  I try to pick shoes with little arch support, and pick flatter sandals. With my work boots, I use two pairs of socks.   I've noticed since I have changed from wearing shoes all the time to the above, my feet almost never get cold, if anything they get hot, even in the winter.  I had a girlfriend who used to have cold feet all the time, and used to wear socks all the time.  I told her to try taking the socks off, and going  barefoot more and she wouldnt have that problem.  She tried it and it worked for her, too.  After a couple of weeks of being barefoot at home she wasnt having cold feet any more.  I then got her hooked on flip flops.

My ways may not be the best, but they are a happy medium for me.  I wont usually go barefoot in public, unless its on a natural surface like grass, sand, or dirt, or just outside around the house.  In big cities, it would be very hard to go barefoot all the time.  There are just too many people and too many manmade surfaces they walk on that arent healthy.  In smaller towns, it's much easier to go barefoot more often, but still cant go barefoot all the time.
