  1. my uncle was rescued from the beaches at dunkirk being one of thousands who were saved that day,he later took part in the d-day landings and all he would say to me in later years was that the death and destruction he saw that day will be engraved in his mind forever,he served in a local country regiment where most of the soldiers knew each other from civvy street and it was these  soldiers,his mates that he saw die all around him,


  2. My Dad jumped into Normandy with the 101st. Airborne. He would never talk about it.

My grandfather landed at Omaha Beach in the third wave on d-day.  The beach had already been taken by the first and second waves, so he didn't have to do any fighting that day.  He did say the beach was "blanketed" in bodies and blood.  The scene in Saving Private Ryan when they finally take the beachhead and show the waves coming up red onto shore is NOT an exaggeration.  From Omaha beach my grandfather was involved in the sweep through and retaking of France.  Thats about all I know!
