I have a 13 year old daughter that has ADHD & ODD. At times I wonder how I will ever make it through her teenage years. Do you have any advice that might help? I dont know anyone else who has a child with this. I guess my friends think that I am nuts when I tell them all of the issues that we deal with on a daily basis. And it is hard when you have noone to talk to about it.

  1. My son has this and he is on 40 mgs of ritalin a day and we have to take our days minute by minute... my son will be fine one minute and the next minute he is out of control... having a child with odd is very hard emotionally and physically and u have to remind them u are the parent and enforce the punishments for bad behavior... they cant control the outbursts but they can control the behavior... we are now at the point of taking away priviledges for our son and it works like a charm... I am here if u need to talk and i go thru this every day with my son and u can bend my ear anytime... here is my email address:  wkakfa1997@yahoo.com

  2. Oh yeah, I have a teen age son with the same conditions.  Have you considered medication?  That seems to help mine.  Though a side effect is weigh gain.  Mine also needs a  lot of structure > I sometimes have to repeat what I'm saying as he's off somewhere else.  So the first thing I always do is make sure I have his full & undivided attention.

I also find it works best to suggest, as opposed to order, something to be done.  Such as please pick up your room now.    Plus, I find it's often helpful to take him out of the house & talk to him> there's a convenience store we walk up to nearby.  I get him a small treat & we have conversations on what's going on in his life, what's bothering him.  For some reason, he has a lot of phobias.  We've become quite close, & I don't see too many of the bad behavior issues.

    Working together is the key.

    Best wishes.

  3. Honey i have ADHD and it is not that bad i just had problems with listening in class to the teacher and i just went to the psychiatrist and he gave me meds and i have been on them for a couple of years now I have finished High School and I am in college.  So just pray about it and everything will work out your way.

  4. My 8 year old son has these conditions and it really is stressful.  For the first 2 hours or so in the morning, he is bouncing off the wall until his medication kicks in.  But at the same time, when the meds wear off, he gets into a depression state.  The onlt way that I can make it through my day without pulling my hair out is:

Make sure to follow a routine!!!

    Lower sugar in the diet....

Do not talk to your daughter when you are angry....make sure that you are calm and don't judge her or her behavior.

Make sure to talk to her in private and with no distractions.

If I can help at all, let me know!!

  5. My little sister had but seemed to "grow out" of it in her late teenage years.

  6. My older sister has it(adhd) and it is very rare in girls most children who have it are boys. She can't stand certain fabrics and foods because of the texture of hard and soft crunchy and smooth in the same type of food.Try searching online for a parenting guide to teenagers with adhd. Such as adhd and me by Blake E.S. Taylor. adhd: how to deal with very difficult children by Alan Train.(the title isn't as mean as it sounds.)
