  1. My son was diagnosed with developmental delay and semantic/pragmatic language disorder, six months later he was diagnosed with autism. He was three rising four at the time.

During his primary school years he developed good reading skills, his language developed really well. He found the physical act of writing difficult, but could type with fluency.

He is now an adult living in a small farming community and working with cattle and horses. He is a productive member of the community, able to make choices, friendships and relationships which he values.

I attribute much of his success to the support of some wonderful teachers and support workers we have encountered along the way.

  2. I'm dyslexic. I was diagnosed when I was 15 years old, I struggle with writing and I can't read when I'm under pressure. My teachers used to call me stupid.  I'm now 25, I have a degree, I've been a forensic scientist and I'm doing a PhD now, because I have a talent for science. Try not to pressure your kid, just let them know that they can do anything they want if they put their mind to it. Give them a chance to do as many things as they can so they can have a chance find what they are good at :-).

  3. i got A.S  and i was diagnosed when i was 13 and im now 14 and i have coped with it really well (thats what my teachers said).

  4. Not my own children but in my career I have known many such children who have made slow but steady progress and who have gone on to lead relatively successful adult lives.  Education is for all, time spent teaching children or supporting their learning is never wasted.   Nebertheless as a parent, it is difficult and requires consistent support from family, friends and the appropraite professional services.
