  1. I agree with self phones being banned but a good argument would be where to you draw the line.  Should eating while driving be banned?  I've watched men shave and women put on makeup while driving these are just as distracting but not illegal.  I don't know if this helps.  Also talk about the voice controlled and hands free technology.

  2. The driver should be more responsible as to knowing when to use a cellphone

Its really the same problem as with students with cellphones

They should know better then to be distracted while they are doing something important it shouldn't be up to the government to enforce that, it should'nt be on the hands of a fed to tell the cellphone user to shut the phone off and watch where they are going

and if you cant handle an in car conversation

Ask people to shutup while you drive

(A note to cellphone users: shutting your phone off wont implode the universe/reinstate ww2/recreate 9/11/01/kill you or your family or any other horrible event etc....)

  3. There can be laws to ban just about anything, and cell phone/driving laws are an example of this. They sound and feel good, but are rarely enforced. Then there is the situation in which a driver is distracted by other stuff (i.e., other passengers, meals, makeup, radio/CD, GPS, etc.); those drivers are at least as dangerous as cell phoners (although we have all seen a driver on the phone who is driving dangerously), but anti-cellphone laws get more votes for the politicians who sponsor such legislation (Google Felix Ortiz).

We have so many laws on the books, most of which are not enforced (nor enforceable to any significant degree); more laws like this do not make anybody any safer out there.

Drive (or observe drivers) in and near Ithaca, NY and you will see what I mean. ;)

  4. I live in New York where there is a law against driving while using a cellphone.  Hardly enforced, though.  Argument One:

Using a cellphone means that you're not using two hands to steer your vehicle.  Unsafe.  Argument Two:  Listening and or arguing over a phone  distracts your attention from driving and or driving defensively. Also, unsafe.

  5. Tasking police officers with enforcing a cell-phone ban takes them away from other jobs that might be more important to our safety.  While he's writing a ticket to someone who's driving safely but using a cell phone, he's not stopping the drunk driver who's about to run a red light and broadside a mini-van.  If someone is driving dangerously, they deserve police attention; if they're not driving dangerously, who cares if they're using a cell phone?

  6. There really isn't a good reason why they shouldn't be banned when driving.

  7. It should only be banned for people who can't do two things at once ... like drive and talk! It's pretty simple, really. As if you need your eyes to talk -- they can look in the mirrors perfectly fine while you move your lips!

  8. I can think of several reasons why they should not be banned.

    1. If someone is following you and you feel threatened, do you want to pull over and stop before calling the police?

    2. If you're lost in a dangerous neighborhood, getting directions from someone on the phone could prove to be a lifesaver. This once happened to my daughter, and her cell phone was the most valuable tool in her car. Stopping would have been the worst thing she could have done.

    3. What if your husband/wife/parent discovered you left your wallet or something equally important behind? Wouldn't it be better if they called and let you know before you got too far?

    4. "Hey, my order just arrived. Stop and pick it up on your way home. That way you won't have to go all the way back."

    5. Suppose you were following a drunk driver and wanted to report it to the police. I would think the police would prefer you kept the car in sight instead of parking to use the phone.

These types of examples are why cell phones should not be banned in vehicles entirely. Sometimes it's necessary to use one while driving. Pulling over and parking isn't always the best option.

Calls that consist mainly of mindless, unimportant chit-chat, however, could easily wait for a better time.

  9. How else would Jack Bower accomplish anything if he was not able to use his cell phone and drive at the same time?

  10. honestly it really isn't the cell phone, most of those inattentive bad drivers, will still be the same inattentive bad drivers without cell phones. it wont change anything. they will turn there radio's up, sing along and still not pay  any attention to what theyt are doing. not really a reason to not ban them but banning will make little to no difference.

  11. the only reason i can think of is if your like...having a medical emergency and for some reason your driving around town. text messaging is acceptable under no circumstances while driving though...thats ridiculous.

  12. This response is based purely on _Hands free_ use of cellphones.

If making calls on cellphones using hands free equipment (Ford / Microsoft) Sync, GM Onstar, Navigation devices with hands free bluetooth abilities, headsets (wired or wireless) is to be banned, then so should any communication between the driver and the other occupants of the vehicle, as the driver is more likely to take their eyes off of the road when talking to someone in the vehicle than a voice emitting from a speaker somewhere in the cabin.

  13. Hands free just maybe. If you have to pick it up or text no way José.

  14. MOST EVERYONE HAS A CELL PHONE AND WILL USE IT ANYWAY THEY CAN TO GET AWAY WITH IT..WHICH IS MORE DANGEROUS THEN JUST USING IT IN TYPICAL FASHION....BUT HERE IS MY FAVORITE POINT....DO YOU LISTEN TO THE RADIO AND SING IN THE CAR?...DO YOU CHANGE THE STATION...ALL THIS IS TYPICAL USE OF A CAR,AND IS NO DIFFERENT THEN TALKING ON A CELL PHONE..i WOULD ARGUE THAT LISTENING TO MUSIC IS THE SAME AS LISTENING TO PERSON TALKING ON CELL PHONE....SINGING IN THE CAR IS NO DIFFERENT THAT YOU TALKING ON CELL PHONE...AND CHANGING STATIONS IS NO DIFFERNT THEN HOLDING CELL PHONE TO YOUR HEAD.....

  15. Using a mobile while driving is like drinking 5 pints of beer while driving, your distracted, your engrossed in the convo, your vision is limited as is hearing, and if a person mowed down..  a family ..a oap a tramp no matter what i think 30 years in jail at the least.  personally if you recked my car while on a mobile, i'd destroy the mobile and slice both of you ankle ligaments..never drive again!

  16. they should be banned any kind of use while driving. they cause wrecks and carelessness

  17. They should be used only in an emergency but at the same time that will be a gray area to enforce.

  18. I can't think of any reason why someone couldn't pull off the road to talk on the phone.  Its even rude seeing people in stores talking on the phone while at the checkout stand, so cell phone use should be limited to the person being in their own vehicle or in a non-traffic area that will not interfere with everone else's day to day operations.

If your going to talk on the phone pull off the road, or better yet pull into a parking lot park, and talk on the phone.

If you get a phone call while your shopping, don't answer it, you have voice mail, if its important they will either leave a message or they will call back.  If the person that is calling doesn't do either then the call wasn't very important.

Same goes for people driving down the road reading the paper, reading a book, or even worse (seen this a week ago) someone driving down the road reading the owner's manual to their car.

I think there should be something installed in all vehicles that automatically locks a cell phone so that it cannot be used while the vehicle is running.

  19. OK, so, you got invited to this party at the last minute on a Friday night, even though you know you have to work the next day. But, you agreed to go because you didn't want people to gossip about what a party crusher you are. You show up, have a great time, and when it's about 4:00am, you figure, "Hey, I have to get up in 2 hours! So, you rush home and get right to bed. You set your alarm clock and everything, but you are so tired that you oversleep! You think MY BOSS WILL FIRE ME IF I'M LATE AGAIN! You rush in the car with a bagel for breakfast. After you finish the bagel, you call to your boss and make up this clever story about how your grandma went to the hospital last night and you stayed up all night to comfort her. You see? If you couldn't talk on your phone and drive at the same time, you'd be fired. Then, you'd be living in a box on a street corner, holding up a cardboard sign and your thumb, lookin' for a ride. . .

And it's all because you couldn't talk on your cell phone and drive at the same time.

    :)

    Is that a good reason?
