Does anyone have a horse with navicular disease?

I have a 15 year old Thoroughbred mare.. that had been diagnosed by a vet with navicular disease.. I was just wondering if anyone can give me some suggestions on corrective shoes, supplements etc.

  1. I volunteered at a non-profit riding establishment where we had lots of older horses.  Many were diagnosed with navicular disease and we always treated with padded shoes.  It made a big difference for them.  Unfortunately, the disease is progressive.  When the padded shoes weren't enough, we'd give bute prior to riding to help manage the soreness/pain.  Eventually, those horses needed to be retired from riding.  


  2. Your farrier should know the correct way to shoe her..

    I have a quarter horse with navicular that is completely sound with corrective shoes.. (full rubber wedged pads, idk if that's what they are called, but thats what they are lol).....

    I give him bute if he ever shows lameness, but this is once in a blue moon, just like a sound horse with a stone bruise or something once in a while.

    Some people use bute tabs(crused) with the feed, 1 or 2 every time the horse is fed.
