Question:

Does anyone have a recipe for taco seasoning mix similar to what McCormick and Old El Paso sell? ?

Those little 1.25 ounce packets sell for 50 to 75 cents and appear to be made from spices in my pantry. I like to cook and I love saving money when I can. I'm just wondering if anyone has come up with a recipe for mixing the seasoning at home.

  1. Homemade Taco Seasoning Mix

    • 2 Tbsp. chili powder

    • 4½ tsp. cumin

    • 5 tsp. paprika    

    • 1 Tbsp. onion powder

    • 1 Tbsp. garlic powder

    • 1/8 tsp. cayenne pepper

    • 2 tsp. all purpose flour

    Mix and store in airtight container.  This homemade mix is stronger than the store bought so you don't need as much.


  2. Taco Seasoning Mix

    1 tablespoon chili powder

    1/4 teaspoon garlic powder

    1/4 teaspoon onion powder

    1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes

    1/4 teaspoon dried oregano

    1/2 teaspoon paprika

    1 1/2 teaspoons ground cumin

    1 teaspoon sea salt

    1 teaspoon black pepper

    In a small bowl, mix together chili powder, garlic powder, onion powder, red pepper flakes, oregano, paprika, cumin, salt and pepper. Store in an airtight container.

    This makes about 10 servings

  3. Taco Seasoning mix

    2 teaspoons instant onion, Minced

    1 teaspoon chili powder

    1/2 teaspoon dried red pepper, Crushed

    1/4 teaspoon dried oregano

    1 teaspoon salt

    1/2 teaspoon cornstarch

    1/2 teaspoon instant garlic, Minced

    1/2 teaspoon cumin, Ground

    Directions

    1Combine all ingredients in a small bowl and blend well.

    2Spoon mixture onto a 6-inch square of aluminum foil and fold to make airtight. Label as Taco Seasoning Mix.

    3Store in a cool, dry place and use within 6 months.

    4Makes 1 package (about 2 T) of mix.

    5Using the above recipe as a guide you can increase the amounts to make any number of packages.

    6Taco Filling: Brown 1 lb lean ground beef in a medium skillet over medium-high heat; drain the excess grease. Add 1/2 cup water and the seasoning mix.

    or

    Spoon 1 tablespoon of minced dried onions in a small bowl or cup.

    Add 2 teaspoons of chili powder.

    Add 1 1/2 teaspoons of salt.

    Add 1 teaspoon of garlic powder.

    Add 1 teaspoon of cornstarch.

    Add 1 teaspoon of ground cumin.

    Add 1/2 to 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper or hot paprika.

    Stir to blend.

    Makes the equivalent of a 1 1/4-ounce package of taco seasoning mix.
