It's most expensive in summer and around Christmas.  If you're flexible and can go in the fall, I see $632 +tax for r/t.  http://www.cheapflights.com/flights-to-c...  Consider also flights to Bristol, which is much closer to Cardiff than London.  Continental can connect you there, MIA-EWR-BRS.

about $700 to London, not may planes from London to Wales but plenty of trains and buses, allow $200 maximum for train to Cardiff from central London (they run every hour and take around 2 hours)
