Question:

Does anyone have advice about what to watch out for while in Mexico?

I am going to Nogales, Sonora next week and I have never been to Mexico. I live in AZ, so I plan to park my car on the US side just to avoid any hassles with driving or insurance. I assume that American currency is not an issue in a border city, so I plan to bring US money. What else do I need to be aware of to have a safe visit?

  1. You get a better rate if you use pesos.  Other than that just use your head and don't do anything you wouldn't do at home.  Mexico is not as bad as everyone makes it out to be.

  2. Be careful of your surroundings and do not drink the water. Try not to be by yourself, walk with someone.

  3. Nogales is a safe town; I´ve been there a few times.  Don´t wear a f***y-pack, don´t carry around wads of cash, don´t be too flashy...anything that´d make you an obvious target in any city.

Don´t drink tap water, don´t stray too far from the tourist areas unless you speak Spanish...

I agree with the locals comment -- the good food is where they´ll be eating!  There is a McDonald´s near the border, though, if worst comes to worst!

  4. Be careful what you eat or drink.  Take a friend with you if possible, and bring some toilet paper in case you have to go.

  5. my best advice is not to trust anyone..  there are thousands of ways people get screwed without knowing.  Do not carry moer than $20 dollars at the time in your pocket.   other than that you should be ok.. Enjoy!!

  6. As for good restaurants, look for restaurant that have a lot of locals eating there--they usually know what's good.  But don't start looking until after 7 or 8pm because they eat later than we do.
