Question:

Does anyone have an idea on what is causing this problem(a/c)?

I have a window unit that's just started making squealing sounds from what I am assuming to be the fan. I don't want to mess with it myself unless it's something super simple. I also don't want to be taken for a ride if I hire an expert.

What are the possible reasons for a squeaking/squealing noise coming from the direction of the fan and is it likely to be a costly repair if I were to hire someone?

  1. Try from the outside and push up on the bottom of the pan of the unit. You may only have to slide some shims between the cabinet and the unit to level it.

Depending on the size of the a/c, on each end ot the fan motor there could be little plugs (about 1/4 inch) pull them out and put a few drops on fine grade machine oil in each side and replace plugs.

  2. Probably a bearing going out in the fan motor. I doubt that it is the compressor, if it is still cooling. Repairs should be ; replace motor. Cost of motor between $50 to $150. If you slide the unit out of the metal housing & take it to a repairman labor shoud be around $75. If you call someone to come and fix it labor will be around $150

  3. Well, a squealing fan is usually caused by a bad bearing on the shaft that spins the fans. Sometimes its as simple as shooting it with some WD-40 but if its really far gone the repair wont last long. Pull the unit out of the window and take the cover off. (usually 12 or so hex head screws) Obviously unplug the unit first. Once the cover is off you can check the fans for damage and also grease the shaft. Whole process for a novice should take about 30 mins.

Worst case senario for trying this is you waste 30 mins of time and 20 cents worth of WD-40, assuming the squeal comes back.

    Good luck!
