Hi I am a 24 yr old living in Sydney, I am hoping to apply at some Melbourne universities for 2009. Obviously I am planning on moving to Melbourne. I have been looking on the internet for tips and ideas but can not find much. Does anyone have any advice on places to live? Which are cheap. What are the bad unis? If any? etc.....

Or could anyone point me in the direction of a handy website?

Thanks

  1. Melbourne is an awesome place to live and study. I lived there for 8 years and studied at both Swinburne University and RMIT.

If you are studying business, Swinburne is good, as they are  money-grubbing rip-off merchants. It depends on what you want to study as to which uni to apply to, but the universities that have the best reputation are Monash and Melbourne.

The best option for housing is to live in a private share-house, which are advertised on uni websites, and in the windows of different inner-city stores such as Readings bookstore Carlton and Friends of the Earth in Collingwood. Readings is the better bet, as Friends of the Earth is usually specifically for peace-loving vegetarians and such. Readings just has more variety.

The areas to live in if you are at Melbourne Uni would be Carlton, Fitzroy, Parkville, North Melbourne, and other suburbs close to the city. This can be done quite cheaply if you find a nice sharehouse.

HOWEVER: The public transport system in Melbourne is quite good, as long as you ALWAYS buy a ticket, so even more far reaching suburbs such as Brunswick, Coburg etc are still more than accessible.  Housing is much cheaper in Melbourne than sydney too, so you will be pleasantly surprised :)

If you check the website of the University you are thinking of apply to, they have their own advice to give you.

    Good luck.

If you need more advice, please email me. I just left melbourne last year, but love the place and could talk about it all day :)

Oh yeah, and don't rent on campus, it's a rip-off! You will meet cool people if you share-house privately :)

  2. I don't really have the experience here but I am a high school student and I am planning on doing the same thing after school. I have to say I have heard good things about The University Of Melbourne, it's internationally known and people travel from overseas to study there, here's the site http://www.unimelb.edu.au/ my mum studied there and she is encouraging me to do the same, so she knows. Umm for places to live there are plenty of apartments everywhere, of if you don't want to live in the city, cross over the west gate bridge and drive along to point cook which is one of the fastest growing suburbs there, it has heaps of new houses being built there.

    Good luck!

  3. Choosing a University really depends on what discipline you intend to be studying.

This website www.vtac.edu.au lists all the courses offered in Victoria and the requirements that need to be met in order to be accepted.

Melbourne is a fantastic city. Once you are accepted into the University of choice, you should only then think about where you would want to live, as the Universities are spread out all over Melbourne.

I also suggest using whereis.com.au to figure out the distance of the Uni to the centre of Melbourne, to give you some indication of the area it is located.

Many students live in the area of Fitzroy, which is very close to town and has a vibrant atmosphere and some cheap share house living. But again, once you find a uni, there will be posters all over the campus advertising for house mates!

    Good luck. Happy searching!
