  1. take surffing lessons

  2. First, you need to start out with a foamy or a beginner's board. They are usually long and very thick. They are the easiest boards for beginner's. In about a few weeks, you'll be standing up... that's if you keep practicing like a mad man.

Another tip, working out is a great way to build strength for paddling out unto the lineup. It also builds muscles and gives you lots of energy. Also, it'll take you a while (maybe two years at most) to get the hang of it. That's if you continue hitting the waves every weekend or whenever you get the chance. If there is a flat spell, don't worry, take your surfboard to the beach and practice your paddling. Paddling will be the maneuver you'll be doing the most when you're out there surfing.

Oh yea, if you keep falling off the board, get back on and try again until water is coming out of your ears...

    but above all, have fun...

  3. Take lessons and you'll get the hang of it.  Make sure you wear a shirt or you'll get a rash

  4. Don't paddle out into a pack of experienced surfers when you are first starting. You'll need to get lots of practice controlling the board and building up your paddling muscles first.

Strat out by catching waves after they have broken, the lines of whitewater, to give you a feel for balancing on the board while it is moving.

  5. learn the "rules" of the water. Know who has priority on the waves. Know where to be without getting in people's way. As far as the actual skill of surfing, practice paddling. That's the most difficult part for beginners. Your shoulders and arms will tire out so quickly. Just keep practicing until you get better conditioned.

  6. Don't get eaten by a shark.
