Has anyone had to go in for an interview with a talent agent, what do you have to do?

  1. Try to act as natural as possible. Dress nicely but don't over due it. Just be yourself and and relaxed as possible.

  2. I used to be on the other side of the table, so here are some tips:

Be clean and neat in appearance, don't go for a "look". Fresh and young, if that's what you are, is best (i.e. don't cake on the makeup).

Don't wear daisy dukes and a tank top, dress like you know where you are and why you are there.

Don't wear too many rings and bracelets, or overbearing earrings or necklaces.

If you have a ton of piercings and don't want to be called in only for "punks", take any that aren't on your earlobe or outer ear cartilage OUT.

Let the agent see you as something of a palette for potential clients.

Go in there with photos (if you don't have professional ones, most recent school pics and other current photos of JUST you, not a picture of you with eight of your friends you think you look really cute in).

Know your measurements (height, weight, waist, hips, bust, inseam, and blouse, bra, dress and pants sizes at LEAST) so you can fill out their form in its entirety on the spot.

Have a resume ready so you don't have to struggle to remember what you've been in.  You can just do a listing by category of your experience.  Try to stick with known plays, etc., if you can, but don't put Third Elf in the 2nd Grade Christmas pageant as a credit.

List any related classes, lessons, experience, skills or training you've had (drama, singing, instruments, gymnastics, martial arts, juggling, dance, which sports you play (WELL), any languages besides English you speak (WELL) , etc.)

If you have a one-two minute monologue you can do, that's great, but only do it if you know it well and can perform it on the spot.

If not, they will have scripts of commercials for you to read.  This part may be on-camera, it may not.

Take a moment to read through the copy (script) a few times to yourself, and decide which words should be emphasized, and the type of person the speaker is, who she's talking to and what her attitude/tone is.  Ask any questions you have, then make the strong choices (whatever they are).  Unless the script specifically calls for it, don't overact or be a stereotype or overly-precious. Just be real.

Don't look down at the script, hold it just below eye level and to the left or right of your face (depending on which hand you're holding it in). Make eye contact as appropriate, and as is comfortable for you without losing your place or concentration.

Most importantly, enjoy the experience and be yourself.  Butterflies will be there, but the more relaxed, engaging and pleasant you are, the better you'll both feel.  You got the interview, they already want to meet you for whatever reason and have allotted the time to do so.  Giving "potential talent" the telephone brush-off is second nature in the biz.

Good luck. It could lead to some fun experiences.

  3. In one agency I auditioned for, they gave me a commercial script in the lobby and I had to memorize it and film it in front of the camera for the actual audition.

In another agency I auditioned for, they emailed me a monologue a couple days prior and had me memorize that to perform in front of the camera when I got there.

In both agencies, they filmed me while they interviewed me.

I just made sure I was outgoing and positive. Happy - smiling - professional. During the interviews, I made sure I expanded on all my answers - so as they were not "yes" or "no" but that they weren't a novel. Don't seem boring, but don't waste their time.

& then all the other stuff the other person said.

  4. My advice:

Be as natural as possible. If your fake your true colors will eventually come out. Honesty is the best policy. Never lie to the talent agent because when they find out (and they will) things will not be good for you. Be nice obviously and don't sound too into yourself. It's okay to brag a little bit about your accomplishments but if you take it too far they will just become annoyed with you. Don't be nervous! Pretend like you are talking to your family or friends because the more relaxed and chill you are the more they will like you! Good luck and congrats!
