I'm planning on pursuing a doctorate in anthropology with the ultimate goal of teaching at a university. I'd appreciate any advice you may have.

  1. I won't go so far as to say that online graduate programs in anthropology (or any social science, for that matter) are completely useless, but no university is going to fill an academic  position with someone whose degree was earned over the internet. A significant portion of a standard graduate education is the personal interaction with professors and other students, particularly (from the perspective of someone looking to hire you as a teacher) the opportunity to teach undergraduates. The best scholars in any field generally work at major research universities which do not offer online coursework, and there are plenty of people turned away from positions despite having degrees from well-respected institutions, so it would be hard to get a leg up on them. Access to a good library and other information resources that aren't available online is a very important part of generating a significant piece of research yourself, which is what a ph.d. is all about.
