Does anyone have any experience using magic jack?

I ordered Magic Jack last evening. I should have done my research, but found out that there are complaints. I do not know if this is widespread or the customary and expected types of complaints.

If you have magic jack (the voip service for 20 per year) please share your experience good or bad. Thanks

  1. The situation you saw, various level Magic Jack Love/Hate messages bunched together, is quite typical.  One theory is there are shills from telcos, cable companies, plus both Vonage and Skype making most of the negative posts to help discourage an even faster adoption rate.  Why?  Pure and simple, they're worried!  (Vonage is dead in the water!)

I believe there's some of that going on, but who knows how widespread it really is.  Those who have been loyal users of either V or S can NOT be too happy to see a new kid on the block come out with an even better deal, right?  Some of the "complaints" are just silly and can be quite humorous indeed.

It seems to me most complaints are when Magic Jack puts a HOLD on people's funds when they order a trial offer.  Most think it's a money grab, when that's not really the case at all.  But, it can LOOK that way!

Here's a quick example...  When you go to buy gas now with a credit card, they may first authorize your card for $50.00 - even though you actually only pumped $20.00.  Do you see people freak out that they were charged $30.00 extra?  No. That extra $30.00 hold will expire just a few days later.

A good site for general info about the Magic Jack is below.

    http://www.magic-jack.info/

That's aimed more at people who have not ordered yet, as it could help them to save money with discount coupon codes and also has screen shots of the entire registration process.

Most people don't want to read a 20 page explanation &/or thousands of old messages to try to understand how it works.

In general, don't sweat it!  Chances are VERY good you will not have ANY problem(s) and will simply LOVE your new Magic Jack.  Let us ALL know how it goes for you, OK?

    Good Luck!

  2. Hi.  I received a Magic Jack a few days ago and have been using it.  It does work, with some issues.  For me, the main issue that when I call out on a cordless phone, sometimes the person on the other end has difficulty hearing me (the sound is too quiet).  I can hear the other end perfectly.  Overall, I still give it a thumbs up as I can't complain about the $20 a year.

You can read all about other's experiences (good and bad) at the link below.  Good luck with your MagicJack and happy talking!

  3. I've had one for about 1.5 months and it works fine.  It isn't perfect, there are some quirks and nuisances but it's usually about as good as a cell phone.  For $20/yr service there's little to complain about.  I'd recommend it if you have a newer computer and DSL or cable internet with a good upload speed.
