Question:

Does anyone have any experience with Mexitel.net? Used for calling US from Mexico.?

I am going to Mexico (Puerto Vallarta) this summer and will be leaving behind my 13 month son. I am nervous about this to begin with, but the calling situation stresses me out even more.

I need a cheap way to call home and check in on him (at least twice a day). I have heard something about Mexitel.net as a good way to do this cheaply. Something about $1 a call up to 20 minutes, but I don't fully follow how it works.

If anyone can help me with this (Mexitel) or give me any other good ideas, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

  1. Oh my goodness - calling cards and whatnot.

    That stuff seems laughable nowadays.

Go with Mexitel - you will be glad you did.

PM me if you need help - my husband used Mexitel when he was going to Mexico for work and we've been using them for our vacations every since. They are the perfect solution.

  2. Sorry, I don't know about that particular program.   I use one calle ProCom Direct.  If you are going to be here for 2 or 3 months , you could sign up for that..just email me if you want the details.  If you are going to be here a short time on vacation, you coud just email home or use instant messenger.  Most resorts have wireless internet avail. and you coud check in at certain times of day with the caregiver.

  3. We've used them twice now, once in Cancun and last time in PV - and it couldn't be easier. Make sure you get a phone local to Puerto Vallarta from them (also easy but sometimes they're all reserved already, be sure to check the schedule) and just dial 001 in front of the US phone number you want to call (including area code) and you get connected, just as if you were home. They will give you a Mexitel phone number also if someone wants to call you from the US they dial 011 and then your Mexitel number (including area code) and it works the same way.  Calls to the US did cost $1 each (unless you go over the 20 minutes, then it's another $1). When people call you, you can talk all day and there's no charge to your Mexitel account. Both times the phone arrived days before our flight and they also send a pre-addressed, pre-paid box for you to return the phone so it really couldn't be any easier. By the way, these are real Mexico phones so you can use them to call your hotel for pickup as you're waiting for your luggage. For us that was a huge plus.
