Does anyone have any experience with carpenter ants? My landlord does not want to get an exterminate?

I just moved to this apartment and when I first entered the apt without any boxes, just to view the place after the other person moved, I saw one. Downstairs the neighbor has them too. Do they come from plants or boxes? Thank you!

They're not your problem. They belong to the landlord.  They live in wood.
