My family and I leave for Cancun next weekend and I was wondering if there are any tips or are there any great things to do or see while we are there.

  1. Make sure to use the restroom on the plane before landing as it seemed everyone else was doing so.  We arrived about noon on a Saturday and it took nearly two hours to get through the airport.

  2. The sunblock is a biggie.

You WILL need it and you will need it IMMEDIATELY.

    But take your own.

Sunblock in Cancun costs about 3 times what it costs in the US.

On the money thing - you will need pesos, but not until you get there (and ATMs work fine, so don't rush). Take a bundle of dollar bills with you, though. Everyone and their brother on your way there and when you get there will want a tip of some sort and dollars work well - BUT, for the ones you want to give away in Mexico, inspect them first. Damaged money  is completely worthless in Mexico, by law.

When you get there, get pesos at least so you can take the bus - and you MUST take the bus (it's only 60 cents but they won't take change and they won't give you change back from your US money). It's cheap, but more importantly it's interesting, and anyone and everyone will try and help you get to wherever you want to go - all you have to do is ask.

  3. Don't buy your tours off the street or at the airport, check with your hotel directly or use local known names such as Aqua tours etc.  I would bring pesos , or get them when you arrive out of the ATM, bring $1.00 USD for tipping, try taco's at the taco factory, check out the Bull ring if you get the chance, there's great shopping in Cancun budget for some great buys, head to Market 23 and 28 for flea market prices.  Try swimming with the dolphins, check out Tulum, Xel-ha or Chichen Itza!  Have fun, get a great tan!

    =)

  4. tip 1. get a lot of good music

tip 2. bring a lot of snacks

tip 3. a have a over night bag on you

tip 4. get something to read

  5. Don't change your money over.  Take small American bills and you'll be fine.

    Take lots of sunblock!

Isla Mujeres is really pretty - it's a ferry ride across from Cancun, but really cool.  They have a dolphin swim place there, and it is well-priced and very fun.  There are several other things to do over there and it can make for a nice day trip.

There are Mayan ruins not far from Cancun.  We didn't see them, but there were tons of tours that we could have taken.  Chichen Itza is supposedly really awesome, and Tulum is right on the water and very pretty (from the pics I've seen).
