The most important tip I can give you is to decide on your topic sentence and then STAY on topic. So many young writers will start off pretty well, but then start throwing in everything they can think of just to fill up pages.

For example, if your thesis was: "Rock and Roll is here to stay, it will never die."  Then all your following paragraphs will be "Because A," "Because B" and "Because C."  There's no need to go into the history of some band or anything else that doesn't support the thesis that "Rock and Roll is here to stay, it will never die."

A tight essay will score higher than a rambling essay.
