Does anyone have any ideas for Cuban & Puerto Rican breakfast meals or atleast desserts?

My husband is Dominican.  He is the one who told me about a dessert that is made by most Hispanic cultures called Tres Leches.  It's a yellow sponge cake drowning in two kinds of milk and cream, and then frosted with fresh whipped cream.  Most people can't say no to it and it's always a huge hit at parties.  This is an online recipe:

  2. Flan is fairly simple - it's a custard with a caramel-type topping - and incredibly yummy.

    Cakes are always hard to resist - hispanic ones are completely irresistable.

    Platanos - fried plantain banana (cooking only) - if you've ever been in the produce area of a grocery store and seen some of the ugliest looking bananas, those would be the plantain.  The uglier (browner) they are, the riper they are.

    We usually slice them on an angle and roll them in flour and fry them in corn oil mixed with butter ... once removed from the heat, we sprinkle cinnamon and sugar on them.

    There's a treat one of my Puerto Rican relatives taught us as kids ... lightly dip a slice of bread in milk (you want it coated but not soaked), lay it on a piece of saran wrap, at the edge of the bread closest to you, place about a spoonful of jelly or jam (we used grape or strawberry) - you want it in a line following across the top of the bread.  Next take a stick of mozzarella string cheese (we usually grated ours, but string cheese works too) right along the jelly/jam.  Using the saran wrap, roll the bread (like a jelly roll) and make sure it stays rolled.  Place it on a baking sheet (we used toaster oven, but big oven works for larger amounts) 350 degrees until you can see the cheese beginning to melt and the bread getting lightly browned.  Remove and serve with a drink (we drank milk with it)

    We'd sometimes coat the bread with the jelly/jam on the top half, sometimes add peanut butter instead of cheese, but usually jelly and cheese and the bread must be dipped in milk ... great morning or afternoon snack.

  4. Fried plantains or "platano" can be as sweet as you like. Empanadas can have different fillings, those are yummy. And I agree flan is really good too!

  5. I agree with Serena; it is a very hard to resist cake but it is also very popular in Venezuela; they also have something called "Quesillo", which is traditional in Venezuela and it is a type of flan. Most Latino countries have this dessert.
