Does anyone have any ideas for a boy's first birthday cake?

Get a cupcake cake, at your local grocery bakery.  It's lots of cupcakes pushed together, and frosted as one cake on top.  Easier to serve, and easier for kids to eat.  They'll do any theme:   Elmo ...  Fire engine ...  Truck ... "Cars" ....  beachball ...

in our family we always make a specail small cake just for the 1 year old to enjoy by themselves- it is great fun watching their face when you put the whole thing in front of them and they choose how to dig into it with their hands! make sure you take off their clothes beforehand cuz it makes a big mess! then just make a plain cake for everyone else, they won't care. get a #1 candle to put on his cake when you sing to him.

I really dont think that your baby is going to remember what kind of cake he has. But if youre going for that theme I would try something like elmo.
