I will be in El Salvador with Habitat for Humanity between June 29th and July 16th. But I am not leaving the country until July 20th, therefore I will have 4 days to mull around and explore... but I'm broke and need to do something on the cheap. I was thinking of trying to make my way over to Honduras.

Does anyone have any ideas for something to do either in El Salvador or Honduras for about 3 days, and that will cost very little?

  1. Traveling by bus is very inexpensive in Honduras-I expect that is also the case in El Salvador.  If you are interested in site seeing you can travel around pretty cheap.  Take a trip across Honduras to the beaches of the North coast, Tela, La Ceiba etc.

  2. You can travel by bus from El Salvador to Honduras. In Honduras you can hang out at the beach. I recommend Tela (mainland) or Roatan/Utila (Bay Islands). Another idea is to visit the Mayan Indian ruins in Copan. Definitely a must see in Honduras!!!

  3. Lots to see and do in El Salvador.I like Honduras too but it seems to me it would be cheaper for you to stay in the same country. You couldn't get that far or see that much in four days and just crossing the border into and out of Honduras and again into and out of El Salvador on your way out and back will cost you money in fees plus you will have to change money and you will lose some of your cash to transaction fees going back and forth from one country to another.Doesn't make any sense if you are already low on funds.

My suggestion would be to stay and see some sights in El Salvador and save Honduras for another time.Head for one of the great beaches where living is easy and food is cheap. Swim, fish,Snorkel, surf or just relax, it's up to you...or you could check out the Los Planes de Renderos above San Salvador or swim in the Alegria Lagoon in the crater of a volcano near the town of Alegria. The archaeological site of Joya de Ceren is great. The Montecristo rainforest is another 'must see'.

On every trip I make to Central America,I always try to spend a week or two at Meanguera, an island in the Gulf of Fonseca that belongs to El Salvador. If you catch a ride on a boat there you can island hop through Honduras,Nicaragua, and El Salvador in under an hour.
