  1. A picture frame with a class photo in it coupled with some flowers.

  2. you know pupils get me gifts every year-and they are all gratefully recieved and lovely but the one thing that i love more than anything else is a simple plain card with nice words in it-it chokes me every time

  3. Anyone who thinks teachers shouldn't get gifts obviously has never worked in a classroom with 20-30 children.  People get co-workers gifts when they are leaving, why not teachers.

Teachers actually are people too, and yes we do like wine.  If that's something that you think your daughter's teacher would like, then go for it.  Gift cards are nice, and I am with the primary school teacher...cheesy mementos are out.

I have worked in places where I got gifts and where I didn't, I don't expect them ever but I love to see what the kids or parents choose.

So go with the wine, if you like....and thanks for taking the time to appreciate a teacher :)

  4. A bottle of wine is not only appropiate, it will be taken gratefully.

It's my Mum's fave gift from her students. She's sick of flowers and candles.

  5. A crystal ornament for her desk

  6. You could ask your daughter to make a card and sign it.

or you could bake a cake :)

  7. gift cert to a book store

  8. I am a teacher and love gifts! :)  However, I have 872 candles, 1,963 mugs and 239 teacher trinkets and enough body and bath lotion to cover all of you!

If you know the teacher's hobby, a gift certificate to a certain store would be wonderful!  A bike shop, craft store, book store, pet store, jewelry boutique, TARGET (my favorite!) or wine shop (If you are going wine route, I would suggest a gift card to a cute wine cellar instead of the bottle.  Illegal to bring alcohol on school grounds.)

One year a student even made a donation in my name to the Red Cross (my family is from New Orleans and lost a lot due to Katrina)  I thought that was so thoughtful!

Good luck, have fun and know that gifts are never necessary.  But, we always appreciate the sentiment!

  9. maybe let your daughter  write a thank you note i did one for my teacher when she left

  10. i would look for gifts that relate to school  fun school stuff for teachers or something  thats what i did for my science teacher when i graduated.

  11. I don't think I would buy wine.  some ideas would be a gift certificate, candle, nice lotions or body splash/bubble bath, things like that. Get a card and let your daughter sign it -or she could make the card

I understand why you don't want to give flowers or candy, I would also stay away from trinkets, plaques and things like that. They get those too but I can only imagine how many are in a box in the attic. LOL!

  12. if you want to buy something

Is it for a man / woman?

Wine would be okay - do you know which one?

    Other suggestions

    book token  / music vouchers

    necklace

    bookmark

pen / pencil set  -  desk tidy etc

As a teacher I really appreciate the gifts I receive but I feel guilty if the parents spend a lot, which some parents do.

I am not talking about a lot of money here - some ideas listed may only be £2 - £3

As an infant teacher some of the 'best' presents I have received have been homemade ie decorated photo frame. And as a keen card maker I love home made cards ( my children believe the more sequins/glitter the better!).  If we get sweets we always make sure we share with the children.

Ask your daughter what she would like to get, she probably has some ideas.  They love to hand over a gift that they have chosen.  My son always chose his own presents.

  13. Maybe a card but nothing else. This leads to rivalry: who can buy teacher the best gift? Children who cannot afford a gift may feel left out and may even resort to shoplifting (OK not preschool).

  14. I am a kindergarten teacher. The best gift I ever got was a visa gift card but that was from my entire class.  If you know where he/she shops, Starbuck's, Macy's, etc. you could get a specific gift card or even a visa gift card for less money.  That way the teacher can get whatever s/he needs/wants.

  15. I am a Pre-k teacher.  The things that mean the most are handwritten letters of appretiation and the occasional gift card :D

  16. flowers are always nice

  17. Why buy anything? I am a teacher and am totally against this (American) idea.

  18. I'm a teacher, and while anything I receive is much appreciated and heart-warming, I always love when children give me personalized drawings, posters, pictures or things I can hang in the classroom so that future classes can admire them!

  19. Look around for a present that has teacher on.  Claires do teacher photo frames, a teachers sash.

At least with items like that the teacher can always keep and treasure.

    Have a nice summer holiday.

  20. A tip for parents on future gifts -- this may be too late for this one.

Get parents to all donate a small amount.  One school, every year for Christmas, the parents all chipped in something like $5 - $10.  We would get a really nice gift certificate to a mall or nice restaurant.

Another great idea was someone made a DVD of me with the children when I left a school.  It had all the kids on the DVD saying goodbye and goodluck and what they liked about me.  It was obvious they were taping this DVD and it was for me, but I still pretended to be suprised.  And I was by how great a gift it was.

Another year, all the students drew pictures, wrote notes, whatever they felt like doing...then it was included in a big photo album.

Again...those are things that take time (more than 3 days) to put together.  Just throwing them out there for other parents as far as what my favorite gifts were of all time.

But, with that said, you've already given us the best gift - letting us watch your child grow up.  I personally like the gifts I can look at and think of a child.  I have a key chain I got that I will forever think of one girl that gave it to me whenever I see it.  I still keep a lot of the pictures around.  Take your child to Wal-Mart and let HER pick out a gift.  (Within reason..unless you REALLY want to buy that 60" Flat Panel Television Set)   You'll be amazed what she comes up with.  And it will mean so much more if it comes from her and not from you.

At least that's how I always viewed gifts.  To the person that said they don't like this idea - the gift is not about greed.  I appreciate gifts because it shows the parents care and the students care.  It's shown in other ways too, but gifts mean a lot more in the American Culture than simply getting something.  It's a way to show you care about them enough to go out of your way to get them something that you think they will enjoy.  Gifts (giving and receiving) are actually centered on generosity a lot more than they are centered on greed.

  21. I am a teacher and the gift I most appreciate is a gift card to a book store. We spend so much money on books for our classroom, so that is always helpful.

I think a gift card to amazon.com would be great too!

  22. A bottle of wine is very nice, but a little inappropriate to give to a teacher, in my opinion. How about a starbucks gift card?  Or a gift certificate for a day at a spa?  For my mother in law's birthday, I made her a gift basket filled with exotic fruits, honey, and cheese. She loved it!

  23. a photo album,  a potted houseplant,  cute fridge magnets,  bubble bath set,

  24. yes a bottle of wine is inappropriate unless you and her are chums and socialize outside of school.  Gift cards are great, teachers really appreciate them...try one from a nice bookstore, coffee shop or boutique in your town.  Good luck!

  25. I think u should buy flowers its a nice gift and people like that sort of stuff.

Or buy a gift voucher from some shop so they can choose what they want. So if u buy a £20 voucher from marks and spencers the teacher can choose what she would want.

Thats what i would do beacuse say if she didnt like the present u gave. This is a much better gift.

  26. before she leaves

you should buy her a present

    that would let her know

    that she was great teacher.

If I were you I would

    make my daughter/son

    write them a card

    then give em' bracelet

    if it's a boy buy him a t-shirt

  27. Gift card to the movies, dining establishment, spa, coffee house, or teacher/office supply store.

  28. In my school wine is quite a common gift. I'd stay away from 'Best teacher' mugs, coasters, magnets etc. I end up throwing them out periodically!

  29. We my friend got a piece of wood with her name Miss Mendez carved on it.  It can be on her desk all the time.  I love it alot

  30. Maybe find a sweet card that your daughter can pick out, or she can make one herself.  Nothing extravagant.  A gift card would be nice if you gave it to her privately.  A donation to a charity in her name would be nice too, especially if there's a cause you know she's passionate about.  If you're not sure, then the Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity and The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation are pretty much safe bets.

  31. no wine, a card a picture will do. ask your daughter
