Are they worth the tuition? Is there someone else that any of you would recommend?

  1. I have had students who were forced to go by their parents.  I saw little change in the classroom.  The bottom line - you get out what you put in.  That's true of Sylvan or in the regular school classes.  Your child might do just as well with a grandparent or someone she trusts who is willing to work with her one on one.  It needs to be someone who is patient and willing to work with her.

Look for opportunities to use reading together.  You can read can labels at the grocery store.  Make games out of road signs and license tags when riding in the car.  Make learning fun.

  2. I signed up for private LSAT tutoring with them.  I saw my LSAT score rise 8 points (which reflected 25+/- percentage points).  In short, they are tremendous.  Well worth the money, but if you're not willing to do the work, then it's not going to help.  If you do the work, it's quite amazing.

  3. i went for about 2 months.

    and they didn't really help

they spent alot of time reviewing things

but i didn't learn too many things

but i guess it depends what teacher helps you

  4. First, you really need an evaluation--get your daughter tested for a learning or attention problem. (If the school doesn't do it, a doctor can give you a referral.) All the tutoring in the world won't help if she has an unidentified problem, because you have to teach kids with learning problems in a different way. (And putting her into another situation where she's failing might make her give up on herself). A child can be very intelligent but still have a learning disability, btw.

If you rule out learning/attention problems, as well as any social/emotional problems that might be making it hard for her to concentrate (for example, severe family issues, problem at school with peer or teacher), then tutoring might be a good idea. Ask other parents about that specific Sylvan, and which tutors are best.

Also, make sure she's getting enough sleep, healthy food, exercise, and has a specific time and quiet place to do her homework. Environment counts!

  5. I went for Algebra when I was about 15. The one I went to was pretty good at teaching the basics but they tend to linger in one area too long. I went for the whole summer and it'd feel like I did the same thing EVERY TIME. I guess if there's a lot of communication it's pretty helpful.

  6. Your child could have a learning disability in reading and writing and I am a member of a LD message board and many parents there say Sylvan is not good for learning disabiliites, and even more say Sylvan is a rip off.
