  1. It looks like you have a very timely question, as there is currently an exhibit called "Glasgow 1955:  Through the Lens."  Start Date : Friday 21 March 2008

    End Date : Monday 29 September 2008

In 1955 Glasgow camera clubs got together to create a unique photography survey of the city.

They photographed everyday scenes of people and places and in the process created a wonderful record of daily life. A selection of these popular photographs is back on display at the People's Palace.

For some it's a trip down memory lane and for others a chance to see the city as it looked over half a century ago.

    Book

A book with 90 photographs from the survey is for sale from the museum shop and all bookshops.

    Glasgow 1955: Through the Lens

Friday 21 March to Monday 29 September

    Free entry.

On a related message board, I found this:

"There was also a very good photograph of the Quarter Mile Bridge with Mossbank Industrial School in the background. I think this was mentioned on the GGBB quite recently.

Copies of all the photographs are available for purchase from:

    Photo Library

    Glasgow Museums

    The Burrell Collection

    Pollok Country Park

    2060 Pollokshaws Road

    Glasgow G43 1AT

    e-mail: photolibrary@cls.glasgow.gov.uk

Unfortunately, and I find this very puzzling, there does not seem to be a formal catalogue of the photographs in the exhibition.

  2. In 1911 the early history of Mossbank Industrial School, Millerston, was described in the columns of the Kirkintilloch Herald in the following terms:

MOSSBANK INDUSTRIAL SCHOOLS.- Mr. James M'Farlane, who has been a member for twenty years of the committee in charge of the Mossbank Industrial Schools under the Glasgow Juvenile Delinquency Board.

Found a photo of the Quarter mile bridge leading to Mossbank.

Ieven checked Scottish search engines and couldn't find a photo

  3. Friends Reunited website is now free - try searching there.

    Good Luck

  4. There's a book called "Old Riddrie, Millerston and Stepps" written by John Hood and published by Stenlake Publishing, price £7.99 which has lots of photos of the area, and would seem to include a photo of Mossbank Industrial School.

    http://www.stenlake.co.uk/books/glas.htm

The blurb on their web-site about the book states

"Riddrie, Millerston and Stepps were once rural estates outside the city of Glasgow. Nowadays they're better known for the housing schemes and city institutions that have been built on them. There's a real mixture in this book, from rural scenes of Wallace's Well, to pictures of prison guards standing outside their (now demolished) tenements at Barlinnie. The Monkland Canal is included too, as well as loads of cracking shots of Glasgow's trams, photographed as they rattled to and from the terminus at Riddrie, and later Millerston after the line was extended. Hogganfield Loch, Mossbank Industrial School, Robroyston Hospital, the Wallace Monument, Cardowan Colliery and Provan gasworks are also featured"

Best to e-mail or call them to make sure that it's included before buying it tho'

    Enjoy!
