Does anyone have any recommendations on where to spend New Year's Eve (31st Dec) in Vietnam?

I realise that Vietnamese New Year is in February but I will be there over UK Xmas and NY. Has anyone spent time here at this time? We would like somewhere lively but preferably on the beach.

  1. Well, I'm not positive, but I don't think Dec 31 is any bidg deal there. I don't know if anyone celebrates or not.

Vietnemese celebrate Tet, which is there New Years, and this past year was in February.

  2. Contrary to popular belief, Christmas and (Julian) New Years is very popular in Vietnam, and especially in Ho Chi Minh City. District 1 is one big party from before Christmas to (Julian) New Years Day. Definitely go to Ho Chi Minh City and make you travel plans early, because it is the start of peak travel season in Vietnam.

The biggest holiday is Tet (Lunar New Year). Tet is so big in Vietnam that travel into the country becomes difficult from Julian New Year until after Tet. Tet is celebrated all over Vietnam, but the biggest party is in Ho Chi MInh City or Hanoi.   Again, make your travel plans early, especially your inbound flight to Vietnam.

  3. Uhm... If you wanna have a really cold Christmas with ya bf/gf, you can come to Sapa (in Lao Cai, northern Vietnam) or Dalat (in the South). Sai Gon - Ho Chi Minh City is also a good choice for those who prefer dynamic air. Christmas is now considered one of the biggest festival of the year in Vietnam.

  4. Yeah, I was in Vietnam for New Years 2006.  We spent it in Saigon.  I think it was probably the best place in Vietnam to be for the New Years.  We were in the backpackers area, and they closed off the whole block for a block party (w/live band and all).  The only downside about spending the New Year in Vietnam is that the gov't regulates the clubs and they close around midnight...which is a bit of a bummer.  They stayed open slightly later for NYE.

  5. I don't think New Year's Eve is o good period to go to Vietnam ( tourist cities, beaches ). It is not easy to book the accommodation as it is a peak tourist season and you have to pay the surchages for not only the room but also for the meals ( compulsorry ), for the transfers, for the flights/ trains...

The same status for Tet Holiday Lunar New Year.
