Does anyone have any suggestions for a play to pull an audition song from for a baritone voice?

I am a man in his late 20s who will soon be auditioning for conservatory programs in theater(better late than never I say) and need a song in case I am asked to sing. I am a baritone, but I prefer that no specific suggestions for songs be given me, but just some plays to look at for a starting point in finding an appropriate song. I still have yet to test my vocal range but will be doing so soon, though I am aware I have at least a 2 octave range, possibly 3, as well as a falsetto range. As I said, I plan to do most of the work on finding the piece myself, but just need a jumping off point.

  1. You can also check out several of the tried-and-true warhorses of the musical world, Rodgers and Hammerstein! Look at South Pacific in particular for some beautiful baritone solos. Some good songs can also be found in a few of Stephen Sondheim shows, Sweeney Todd and Follies to name a few. Some other shows to look at are Man of LaMancha, Les Miserables and Music Man. Depending on your preference and comfort range, there are some low tenor and high bass songs that you might want to consider as well. I think it is wonderful that you are going to do this...and I wish you the best!

  2. Check out the movie/show, "Showboat".  One of the greatest pieces ever written for a baritone (written by Jerome Kern) is in that show.  In the 1951 movie version, it was performed brilliantly by William Warfield.  The first time I ever heard this performed on stage live, I actually got goose bumps listening to it.  Good Luck!
