I am currently going into my junior year in high school and thinking about college. I would like the Stay in the mid atlantic region of the country. I would prefer a college in a more urban setting. My grades are fairly good. I have a 3.3 gpa. I am involved in Key Club, Diversity Club, and Steering (similar to student council). I have been told by my writing teacher that I am a good writer, hopefully that will help me with my admissions essay. I'm not sure about what I would like to go into, but I was thinking some form of science or something in the medical world. Does anyone have any suggestions of colleges that sound like they would be a good fit for me?

  1. I would check out the SUNYS in NY. I may also look out Bard, Rutgers, and a few others. Some reach schools would be NYU, and Boston U.

  2. As gossip_palms above said, the SUNY schools are good fits, as is, I would image, Penn State. If you do not mind moving to New England though, you have a lot more to choose from. The Boston metropolitan area alone has over 60 institutions of higher studies, 40 of them 4-year colleges, and after the top few like Harvard and MIT, plenty to choose from for a student with your record. The state university systems of Massachusetts and Connecticut will also be good options.

If you manage to slightly improve your GPA to 3.5 or so, then you would have a good GPA and a good set of activities. I am sure you will get into Boston University with your current GPA, and easily so with an improvement. NYU should also be a realistic choice with a slightly better GPA. Lehigh, Brandeis, U of Rochester, Syracuse University, and Boston College are other good, private national universities that would be a possible fit. You might just have an outside chance of getting into Tufts, University of Virginia and Georgetown. If you don't mind looking farther down the east coast, Wake Forest and UNC-Chapel Hill are also good choices, while Notre Dame in Indiana and Case Western Reserve University in Ohio are good options that are further afield to the West.

Wherever you choose to apply, good luck!
