Does anyone have any suggestions for university study techniques for someone with Audio Processing Disorder?

I have a young woman that I am working with who has APD. She is currently studying at university and is already utilising a tape recorder. I am looking for more study techniques that may be of use to her...

  1. she should be provided with copies of notes-

    pair up with a note buddy in each class

    all directions to be written-no verbal tests

    I've heard of software that will turn the speakers words into text automatically so it can be read like closed captioning (used for a student who is deaf)

    in the USA-the law requires the university to make such accommodations


  2. A speech pathologist and an audiologist will be able to give you specific techniques. You can find someone to work with at ASHA.ORG.

    In the mean time I would arrange for the person to use an FM System. Which basically is the person talking wears a microphone that is directly connected to hearing aids or head phones. It eliminates the signal (the person speaking) to noise (background noise) ratio making it easier for the person to focus.
