My brother left his yamaha R6 in Washington when he moved back to Hong Kong. Due to the rise in gas prices I have decided that I want to fix up the bike and start to ride it since it just sits in the garage. Is there any tips or things I should know about? Is riding this bike similar to riding a bicycle? What is the big difference aside from speed of course?

  1. if you've never ridden before try and take a MSG course in your area they can teach you the proper way to ride and use the controls in a safe environment versus getting on a sport bike like an R6 and trying to teach yourself this bike is not for a beginner ,it would be best to find a smaller bike like the Ninja 250cc used and learn on it before getting on the R6

  2. If you're new, follow the advice of most of the rest of the folks and start by taking the MSF class, which will be on a smaller bike. Having ridden a bicycle helps but it's still like apples and oranges. I've put thousands of miles on a road bike (bicycle) but being on a motorcycle is a whole different thing, especially in heavy traffic, wind, etc. Handling, because they are so much heavier, (and I only ride a cruiser that's around 500lbs) is a big part of it. The class will give you all of the basic skills and then practice on something a little easier to start out with. An R6 sounds a little big to start with..

  3. Best thing you can do first is go take the MSF beginners riding course. They even supply the bikes. It can save your life!I can't stress enough how much every new rider should take that course.

  4. Dont pull any wheelies till you get used to it hon!~

  5. if its been laid up for more than a couple years it will need carbs cleaned ,tires and battery, that is nowhere near a beginner bike and will spit you off as soon as look at you,not very forgiving, probably does about 60 in first, wheelies at will and stoppies ,find a ninja 250 and some crash gear and go from there

  6. Riding naked helps build confidence - do it often

  7. I would suggest the MSF course as well. The R6 is a potent little bike, so large amounts of throttle could scare you. Make sure you wear protective gear as roadrash hurts like h**l. Balancing its like a bicycle, of course its like a car where you use throttle clutch and shift. Have fun, be safe.

  8. Please take a good certified riding class. Always and I mean always assume that all the other drivers do not see you and do not count on them stopping as they should, be a very very defensive rider and always watch out for the left turn from oncoming traffic, that is the most common accident. Wear good protective gear and do not over ride you personal abilities and ride a Bike you can handle well. Don't ride over your head and keep in mind that in reality Motorcycles can be dangerous and if you have an accident,  you will loose. Be careful and enjoy.

  9. Listen to them about the courses and Dont wear a skirt
