Does anyone have any tips on saving petrol?

I'm looking for some hand tips to save fuel (petrol, but welcome tips for diesel too), are there any petrol substitutes and can it be manufactured at home easily? I also have a hole in my air filter, could this effect my fuel consumption (worse or better).

Thanks to everyone contributing.

  1. Light right foot, smooth driving, engine revs around 2200 maximum. Read the road ahead.

Other than that get a bicycle.

  2. walk?

or see if your vehicle can be converted to run on biofuel made from used chip fat - it's meant to be really cheap to run but I don't know how much it costs to convert.

  3. Don't buy it.I have a diesel that burns WVO for a $1.00 a gallon.

  4. By a diesel car and convert it to hybrid.

  5. While a hole in your air filter might give you a little better fuel economy for a little while, it will cause your plugs to foul quickly, and the end result will be worse mileage, and it will also damage you engine.

It is better to perform a good tuneup often, change your oil every 3000 mile or use a good synthetic oil.

keep your spark plugs clean and gaped properly, and drive like you have a raw egg between your foot and the accelerator.

  6. Even going 60mph instead of 70mph can save you a heck of a lot of fuel.

  7. To conserve fuel remember these tips:

    1. Drive sensibly - Avoid high speeds

    2. Do Not Accelerate or Brake Hard

    3. Use A/C Sparingly

    4. Keep Windows Closed

(In hot weather: Above 40mph using A/C is more efficient than having windows open. Below 40mph the reverse is true)

    5. Use Cruise Control if available

    6. Avoid Heavy Loads

    7. Avoid Long Idles

    8. Keep Engine Properly Tuned

    9. Check and Replace Air Filters

    10. Keep Tires Properly Inflated

In my youth we had trolly buses in the town where I lived.  They were fast, efficient and quiet.  Then in the 1960s we got diesel buses which made black smoke. . . .

  11. Lately, when I get to a set of traffic lights and they turn red, I knock my engine off because I know I'm gonna sit there for a few minutes.

My Grandad use to knock his ignition off when going down hill. Not wise and way back then, there was less traffic.

  12. Plastic containers work great!

  13. You already have one of the most comprehensive answers possible, I would have thought.  I notice it was stated don't carry heavy loads, I would add don't carry anything that could remain in the garage and avoid short journeys.  Another thing that's worth considering would be to try and plan you travel and avoid covering the same ground twice. For example don't make a special trip to the shops, do it when you pick up the children, you will be surprised how one thought out trip can cut down the mileage and cost.

  14. Buy a Smart car.

  15. Drive "one block ahead of you".  When you are on the road, look at conditions a block (or more) away.  If a light is red or turning red, don't step on the gas any longer, coast up to the light.  If a light is red and turns green, coast up behind stopped traffic so that they are starting to move when you get there - you don't want to come to a complete stop.  It takes a lot of energy to start from a stop.  If you are in traffic, ease over into the lane that has one or two cars in front of you instead of the one you're in that has seven or eight cars in front of you.  If you are on a street that has three lanes, the center lane is usually the best, because people are slowing down to leave the right and left lanes, as well as people who are pulling into those lanes from side streets.

  16. Never go out of your way to find cheap fuel, just buy at the cheapest station on your usual route.

remember, each mile you drive is going to cost at least 10p.

  17. there are all kinds of ways to save perol gas like walk or ride bikes also some places use vegatables oils as fuel for cars.
