Hi There, I am going to the Edinburgh Festival for the 1st time in August.

We have booked the shows that we want to see the most and just wondered if any of you out there had any advice on what to go and see, do and take with us.

We will be there for 3 days.

  1. buy a magazine such as the list,or pick up free supplements from newspapers etc, theres so much going on at festival time, lots of street theatre, market stalls and fringe tasters, people hand out flyers in street too, a lot of events used to be quite reasonable price wise, but they are becoming more expensive so take enough money!have a great time!

  2. Just go out & about & soak up the atmosphere. The city will be buzzing with street entertainers & people advertising last minute bargain tickets for their shows. You will not be stuck for something to do. The High Street (part of the Royal Mile) is the hub of the Fringe Festival. There are various other Festivals on at the same time.

Edinburgh Festival is a collective term for several simultaneous arts and cultural festivals which take place during August each year in Edinburgh, Scotland. There is no actual Edinburgh Festival as such.

Edinburgh International Festival (1947)* — The original and "official" festival consisting of classical and contemporary Theatre, Opera, Music and Dance.

Edinburgh Fringe (1947)* — Started life as a small scale "fringe" event to the EIF, but is now the largest of all the festivals and indeed the largest arts festival in the world.[4] Includes Theatre, Comedy, Music, Musicals, Dance and Children's shows.

    Edinburgh International Film Festival (1947)*

    Edinburgh Military Tattoo (1950)*

Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival (1978)*

    Edinburgh International Book Festival (1983)*

Edinburgh Mela (1995) — celebrating Edinburgh's South Asian communities

    Edinburgh International Internet Festival (1999)

Edinburgh People's Festival (2002, but claims heritage from earlier Festival of same name 1951-1954)

    Edinburgh Interactive Festival (2003)

    Edinburgh Art Festival (2004)*

Edinburgh Annuale (2004) — contemporary art

    Festival of Politics (2005)

Festival of Spirituality and Peace (2005)

iFest (2007) — the Internet Festival and Conference

    Edinburgh Swing Festival

  3. go to the medows festival its great =]

  4. If you have booked the shows that you want to see, just spend time in the High Street and the areas round about, there are plenty of street entertainers giving previews of their shows, trying to get customers through the venue doors. There is also free entry to the art galleries and museums in Edinburgh, if you want some quiet time away from the festival crowds.

Be careful of pickpockets, they love the Festival time as well and come from all over for the rich pickings.

Make sure you have an lightweight rain coat or waterproof with you, although the rain is warmer at this time of year, you still can get very wet.
