hallo everyone! :D i'm looking for serious replies only! preferably from seasoned travelers or natives to germany. i'm planning a trip there in a couple years. (need planning time, money, and am learning the language at the moment) i'm looking for anyone to give me helpful tips on ANYTHING that has to do with my trip. where to stay, what to see, what to beware of. anything you can think of really. i'll obviously be looking at other sites and books before making the trip, but i'd like to get firsthand tips seeing as i don't know any germans personally. :( so i'd appreciate anything helpful. thanks so much!

  1. The Germans appreciate when you try and speak German since many of them really do not understand a word of english, young or old.

Most larger cities like Berlin,Stuttgart etc has what they call a "welcome card" that you can buy and that gives you free acess to their transportation system (excellent by the way, excellent buses, trams, subways etc) and very good discount on museums and lots of other activities. Berlin has an excellent welcome card and I always buy it when Im there.

Berlin should of course be on your list. Berlin is just amazing. The history, the culture, the art, the shops, the scenery. Berlin is one my favorite cities in the world.

Most of the major cities have their own website and they usually have english versions as well like:

    http://www.berlin.de/english/ for Berlin or

    http://www.stuttgart-tourist.de/index_EN... for Stuttgart.

I've just been to Germany myself and visited Berlin of course but also a wonderful small old, very old, city called Meersburg in the south of Germany. It's situated by a wonderful lake called either Lake Constanze or Bodensee. The lake has green water and is amazing to swim in. We rented bikes for a few days since it's basicly flatland we biked around and saw such beautiful scenery.

Rothenburg is another historic city with a beatiful buildings and surroundings.

I've just mentioned Stuttgart. I should put Wûrstburg on the list as well.

As to where you want to stay while travelling it depends on your budget.

    Germany is a beautiful country.

I can't think of anything to be aware of though, you learning the language will be a big help and would otherwise have been a bit of an issue, I mean you can get by but speaking German will be a big plus.

  2. Way back when I was in high school (early 80s) we took a trip to Europe.  On the last days of our trip we ended up on a train ride through Germany.  About 4 of us high school kids were in the car and a German man with a brief case sat down by the door - propped his legs up in the empty seat across from him - thus blocking our only exit.  He put his brief case in his lap, looked at us and said - in English - "While in Germany you must spead German".

Since none of us knew any German words, and we didn't know what was in his brief case - and we didn't know his history (was he in WWII??) we remained quiet for the rest of the trip.

I'm sure all of Germany is not this way, but I would suggest learning a few German phrases.

  3. Be prepared for rain. It's not fun to have wet feet when it's cool out.  My favorite places to visit were: Berlin, Dresden, Munich, Wurzburg, Rothenburg, Koln, Trier, Heidelberg, Frankfurt, and I'd like to visit again and again.  It's a great country with cool people and pretty views, cozy interiors, and things work efficiently like a well-oiled machine.

  4. That's a pretty broad question.  There is so much to see and do, it all really depends on a few factors

    -  how much time do you have?

    -  what are your interests?

    -  how much money will you want/be able to spend?

These are all factors you must consider.  In general, though, you should see Munich and Berlin.  Everything else in between depends on the 3 factors stated above.
