Does anyone have career advice for a teenager?

I've wanted to be a vet all my life, and have taken the subjects Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Music, German and History, although now I am having second thoughts. I'd quite like to be a police dog handler but after discovering you have to be a police officer for three years beforehand, and to be a police officer you need above average fitness, that is out of my league. Does anyone have advice? I would love something where you are in a lot of contact with animals, and I know I am young to be thinking of this (14), but having an unknown future scares me.

  1. I'm just wondering why you would think that above average fitness is out of your league? After all you have 3 or 4 years to get fit and no-one is stopping you having a regular exercise routine. It's not like you have to be an olympic champion. In a couple of years time you could get a personal trainer for a few weeks to send you further on the right track. It just seems a shame to rule out something you'd enjoy.

  2. Do what you love and the money will come- Oprah

  3. Nothing is impossible, you are only 14 so you have plenty of time to get above level fitness. Start training!

  4. You're 14! Chances are that whatever you decide you want to do now will change by the time you're picking your degree subjects, and even that will no doubt change during your time at University.

When I was your age, I was convinced I wanted to do teaching, and yet here I am in my final year of a Biomedical Engineering degree - wanting to get a career in medical devices.

It's all about what you find interesting really, and that won't be apparent til you're doing A Levels.

I would recommend keeping your options open for now - it's not like you have to have a set job title for by the time you pick your options, just a vague idea.

If you're pretty certain that you'd like to do something with animals, then I would suggest focusing on science. But then, you could always do volunteering work part-time in an animal shelter, it doesn't have to be your main career!

  5. It's scaring to have an unknown future doesn't it? You are still young and that's the right attitude for someone your age. A lot of teenagers don't know this and they spend a lot of time getting themselves in trouble rather than building their future.

What career? Okay........A lot of people think a career is always about working for someone. Or maybe that's all we know. But not a lot of us know that we can actually make a career by self employing.

You love animals...........so why don't you start your own business and love and cherish that business and grow it so it becomes big. You can start your own dog walking business in your area for instance. Before you know after a while you have a steady and growing client base and you are happy doing what you love and you are also earning a living as well. Believe me it's a good feeling.

Anyway, you love animals so you can mix animals with business and build a lovely career in business for yourself. Keep it up.
