  1. Being a river guide would be a really exciting job - and there are plenty of places you can learn.  Check out the links below.  Also, if you have an outfitter near you, see about getting a job with them as an assistant / sales person, so that you can learn the ropes prior to getting your feet wet.    Several river guides / outfitters offer training courses in addition to trips for customers.  

    Check out American Whitewater - it's a non-profit organization.  They should be able to direct you to a school near you.

    Skills will probably all be pretty similar (paddling ability level, swift water rescue classes,CPR / First aid or Wilderness Responder status) but from one geographical location to another you may have different age requirements.    If you're in the USA, in some cases, local, state, or county government may set requirements.

    And, in some cases, river outfitters along a specific river may get together and form their own association to regulate the standards of operation on any given river.
