Does anyone have experience with having their tub refinished?

My bathtub is an awful pink color but it fits well in my small bathroom and it is cast iron. I would like to have it refinished but a friend of mine told me that if I refinished it in white, it would start to chip off and look awful. Has anyone had experience with this?

  1. I have done this a lot and can tell you of one product I use now exclusively for this that's $33.00 and in the Home Depots Paint Department.  The brand name is Klenk's and not only does it work well, it lasts.  This is a two part epoxy and it has a very strong odor so I reccomend that you open any windows and doors to ventilate and wear a respirator.  There are two types in the store, one has an aerosol can. . . avoid it, and choose the other.  You have to follow the directions to the letter, but when your done this tub will look like brand new.  The following is a link to the products web site: http://www.klenks.com/klenkspages/tubtil... review it as it has the product info and application directions and tips.

  2. I painted my tub with the Klenk's epoxy the first poster mentioned. It lasted pretty good but did eventually start losing some of the finish after 4 or 5 years. It started around the drain which I understand is common. Then it lost a bit inside the tub. Of course, you can always re-touch. It's a bit of a big deal to use this paint. You must prep properly, and it would be best if you remove the drain fitting first.. The paint is the smelliest there is while you're using it so if you're sensitive to chemicals that might be a problem, and you must have good ventilation while using it. The room had better be dust-free or any dust will show in the finish. You can't use the tub for some days until the finish cures. The paint is a little tricky to get right around curves and you have to be careful on vertical surfaces or it will drip and you can't get the drips out, but mine turned out pretty well. You can't clean it with abrasives as you can with the original porcelain so keep that in mind. It's possible that with putting white over pink it might need two coats but probably not.
