Question:

Does anyone have good experiences with taking a statin drug?

I read endless comments on medical websites about statin drugs and they are about 100% negative. Horror stories about side effects.

Is there someone out there who is pleased with statin drugs and has had a positive experience?

  1. If you are taking a statin for cholesterol control, you might add something to your diet to be able to drop the med........ breakfast of Steel cut oats, or Irish Oats, or Scottish oats... all the same thing.  Not delicious, not at all.  BUT it will lower your bad chol. level 30 point in 6 weeks.  I promise.

I read about this study about 2 years ago.  Tried it myself... my doc's jaw dropped and I got to stop taking Lipitor..... (smile)

Do I like it?   Not at all, so I add walnuts, ground flax seed, blue berries, and brown sugar.... every morning.... now for THAT sweetie, I'd eat twigs.....  chol. still fine, in fact, my doc now eats this for breakfast.

PS I had no problems with Lipitor... an old statin, and my doc was taking it too.  I just would rather do something natural if possible... rather like, why take lamasil for a toe nail fungus for a year, when you can smear vic's vaporub on it for the same year, and not have an expensive med in your bod?   Don't get me wrong... modern medicine is wonderful... in fact both dad and husband are MD.s    but, countries with less in fat and meat have less chol. problems than we do.  Read a truly great book by Andrew Weil called Healthy Aging.... tons of great ideas... Harvard trained guy, lives in Vail Arizona... rather a hippie in his youth.

  2. The people who post those comments are motivated heavily by their bad experience.  The people who have good results with statins (and there are a lot) will not care to log into a website and post approving comments.

  3. Use them all the time and I've had absolutely no side-effects.

Fact is, all the recent studies have shown that there are overall benefits to one's health, leading me to believe that there are those people for whom statins just do not work.

There are warnings on the labels, and if one statin does not work, you can switch to another statin to see if that works better or without any problems.

  4. I too have read all the horror stories, but these drugs, as all drugs, have gone through rigerous trials, and are proven to lower cholesterol.  Obviously lowering cholesterol is a big factor for reducing cardiovascular disease, so thats good right?

All drugs have dodgy side effects, its just whether benefits outweigh the risks and side effects.

For me they do, my cholesterol levels are now well controlled reducing my risk of CHD stroke etc.
