I was just wondering what kind of improvement you noticed as far as lenses becoming thinner when you got your high index lenses. Did the high index lenses make the entire lens thinner, even the bottom?

  1. High Index lenses are required when you have a high rx. the down-fall is you will get a lot of glare so I would say to get telfon or an anti relefected coating to proctect that.

    These are the lenses

    Plastic below -1.00

    Poly below -3.00 or -4.00

    Mid-Index -5.00 or -6.00

    High Index anything else.

If you are not really worried about the look I could stick with poly.

I am a -3.00 and I have Poly. You will notice a diffrence if you wear plastic and go to another type of lense.

  2. That would depend mainly on if you are near-sighted or far-sighted, and if you have other issues such as astigmatism.

If you are near-sighted [you see better close up generally, but do need reading glasses now] then your lenses will always be thickest on the EDGES the stronger the prescrption gets.

The reverse of this is being far-sighted, where you see things at a distance better than close-up and really need reading and computer-distance correction. In this case your lenses will always be thickest in the MIDDLE the stronger the prescription gets.

High index lenses are a great choice for either type of vision. They will take a lot of that thick edge off of minus lenses and also flatten out that 'coke bottle' look of plus lenses.

When you mention the "bottom" of a bifocal, I hope you are choosing a progressive style bifocal, where no lines can be seen. In this case, yes, the bottom of the lens will be nice and thin as well. If you are choosing the old "flat-top" bifocals, where you can see and feel the bifocal line, than that will always be an added thickness at the bottom.

    I hope this helped!
