Question:

Does anyone have plating suggestions?

I wish I knew how to make my food look more appetizing. The only thing I know is that things look better in odd numbers than even. (In other words 3 shrimp look better on a plate than 4). Does anyone have any ideas?

  1. Very good!  Most people don't know about the odd numbers!  That's especially true in decorating too:) .....  Make sure that you have a variety of colors and textures on the plate (i.e. NOT white fish, cauliflower and rice).  If you sprinkle chopped fresh herbs on things, that adds some instant color too:)  My favorite is fresh cilantro..... I keep red & green bell peppers, and roasted red peppers, in the refrigerator, so I can add diced pieces to all kinds of things for color ......  Besides parsley, you can garnish a plate with sliced oranges, radish "roses," sweet red & green peppers (in the jar), grated carrot ...etc.   Paprika and Tony Chachere's Creole Seasoning give a little color sprinkled on things too......

  2. I always make sure that my dishes have a variety of color, flavor and texture.  Your dark greens are very healthy for you and also provide a beautiful color contrast to almost any main dish.  If you are making a dish like potatoes, which a pretty plain in color, trying adding some olive oil and rosemary or oregano.  With chicken, sprinkle on a bit of paprika, which is mild in taste when used sparingly but adds wonderful color to another bland color.  When entertaining, be creative!  Wrap asparagus stalks in a carrot ribbon (by simply shaving a piece off and tying in a simple knot), add chives to your mashed potatoes, have fun!  It sounds like you know what you are doing in the kitchen, now just have a good time with it!

  3. I like adding bright colors to my plates, but fresh flavors are also an important part of my cooking.  So, I grow nasturtium and pansies in the garden to add to something special to a plate.  When I'm cooking with fresh herbs, I always save some aside to chop and sprinkle on top.  I love the color and the added layer of flavor.

Pay attention to the colors of the rest of the meal and do your best to bring balance to your plate.  Most of all, make sure the flavors work together.

Good luck!  I think you will find that your sense of creativity will guide you.  Have fun with this.  :)

  4. Don't crowd the plate, watch your color combos (i.e. corn, macNchz, and a white meat), not appealing to the eye. Lots of edible flowers and herbs out there for garnish. Parsley, orchids, mint, basil, thyme, rosemary etc.
