  1. yes, slate is nice... very earthy.

pros - diversity of color and richness. many are rough textured.

cons - Like most natural stones, can be porous. Depending on where you use it, probably required sealing.  Variation in size/texture/thickness can make it a little more challenging to install or use for flooring.

  2. home depot's site was under maintenance when i tried your link but i can image what the slate you picked looks like.  keep in mind that most slate is of darker colors and if used indoors can make a room seems darker and actually seem smaller.  if the room(s) you are considering using slate in are already somewhat dark and don't get much sunlight, then i suggest steering clear of the slate and picking a lighter color ceramic or travertine marble (use marble if you're into the earthy look.)  since slate is a natural stone, it needs to be sealed with a good quality stone sealer, and needs to be resealed every 5 years or so depending on how much foot traffic has worn the sealer off.  slate can be difficult to clean, since it isn't a completely smooth top.  i definately don't recommend if being used in a kitchen or bath for this reason.  the top later has a tendency to come off in time as well (called "slaking off"), being that it's a natural stone that's completely made from layers of rock.  the only areas of a home i suggest using slate is around a fireplace or on a front or back porch.  i don't mean for all this to sound like i'm totally slamming slate, because it is a beautiful product when installed correctly, i just think it's too much maintence and too dark for indoor use.  i hope this helped.  good luck!
