I'm 11 and I will begin to Surf soon. I've never done it before so I need some help. First of all what kind of board do I need and which brand. Second is begining surfing hard? And last what are some of the tricks?

  1. Beginners should always wear a leash or leg rope tied to their surfboard.

Every beginner surfboard should also have a safety nose guard to prevent dangerous impacts with the surfboard nose.

Beginners should always surf with a buddy for safety, plus it is cool to share your surf experiences with someone else.

Never push your board through the water fin first. The fin or fins were made to keep the board pointing nose first.

Beginner surfers should consider wearing a vest, rash guard or tee shirt to avoid the rubbed rash they will get on their stomach and chest.

When you fall off your board, cover the back of your head with your hands, with your wrists over your ears and your elbows together. Stay under water for a moment longer than necessary.

There are companies that make helmets and this is another alternative.

  2. im eleven too and i started surfing when i was 8.  depending on how tall you are i would get a board that is 7.5ft to 8.5ft since your beginning make sure to get a foam board, you have the most stability on those.  starting is hard espically if your on your own, try to invite somebody you know that surfs to teach you.  once you get good enough the first basic trick is the cut-back, but its pretty hard

  3. Wow, I think you need some advise from someone your own age. I'm 11, I started surfing when I was 8 and haven't gotten out of the water ever since. Just kidding, but my point is I go all the time! The board I have is from O'neal (an awesome surfing company) and it's a long board, which is really easy to start out on. Surfing can be difficult if

    1) You aren't familiar with the ocean. The waves can be unpredictable and you should know how to handle the water if it turns on you.

    2) You don't have good balance. The first time I tried I fell off a ton, so don't feel bad if you do to. The first time is the hardest and with practice you'll balance perfectly after a few times.

Some of the tricks... Well truthfully I don't think you should be worried about that yet. If it's only your first time surfing, try learning the basics before you learn the hard stuff!

See you on the waves and happy holidays! O and I'm a girl but that doesn't mean that I don't know how to surf!

  4. It's funny, but no-one has suggetsed this yet....the best tip for someone starting out in surfing is....be a good swimmer. Never rely on your legrope to get you out of trouble. In big surf it may snap, then you'll be up c**p creek. There's a secondary benefit here... being good at swimming improves your fitness, especially upper body, that is, shoulders and arms. You need upper body strength to paddle onto waves. When you master this, you can be king of the break.

2nd  tip...paddle onto a wave and jump straight to your feet. Don't kneel, then stand. If you do this, the wave will have passed you by. Practice at home by lying down, then do a sit up, straight into a stand, with bent knees for balance. Trust me, it'll get you standing up on a wave in no time.

Last tip, learning to surf isn't easy. Spend heaps of time practising. You'll fall off heaps, and it will take many years to become really good, but it's worth it. I reckon it's the most fun ever invented.

    Have fun, good luck!

  5. If you take a look at the learning to surf chapters of my book you will find instructions on how to perform most tricks.  There are also links in the surfing online library to other sources of information.  I've listed both links below.

  6. Hmm... assuming that youre about 90 pounds or so at your age lets see.... maybe a 6'7 board about 3 inches thick and 22 inches wide.  I'd suggest a firewire if you could get it, great great boards.  No surfing as a beginner isn't hard as long as you start out right.  For your first few weeks start out on whitewater.  This is the after effects of the wave, than after that you need to move up to very small waves or very large whitewater, big whitewater is hard to get stability on so you just need to hold on tight.  Ok some of the tricks you should be able to do in your first 2 or 3 years would be a snap turn, maybe if you practice enough a floater, and maybe try oout a bottom turn.  Bottom turn is when you go onto the bottom of a wave than turn into the middle of the wave and try to get to the top.  This should be one of the first tricks you try, i learned this in my first month and didnt even think about it as a trick.  Do it right and add some finess(dont know if i spelled that right) and youll be good in no time. Hope you're out on the waves soon.

  7. I would start with some push ups to build upper body strength and swimming to be safe in the water.

As far as equipment I would recommend a longboard, (around 9'), as they're the easiest to catch waves and stand on.

Here's a terrific article I always recommend to beginners titled 'Learn How to Surf in One Day' that has some step-by-step info:

    Good luck and have fun!

  8. Get as big a board as you can. Start with a foam topped board, the brand doesn't matter. Starting is hard, especially if you don't have help catching waves because its hard to paddle fast enough on a very stable board. Don't worry about tricks yet.
