For video editing, I use Hollywood Effects with Pinnacle Studio.

Hi Saint Brophy - There are 2 classes of effects software

- The Commercial stuff

- The Free stuff

1) The commercial stuff is expensive, complicated and very good. This includes packages such as Adobe After Effects and Apple's Motion

2) The free stuff is easier, less functional and, well, free!

Jahshaka

Jahshaka is a free multi-use offline editing tool. Although it is still fairly new on the market.

T@B ZS4

T2B ZS4 is a free video editing and compositing tool from Zwei-Stein. Its not for everyone, but it could be for you.

Wax

A free tool with powerful editing and compositing abilities.

Blender

Blender is a powerful, multi-use editing/compositing and modeling tool. It's one of the best on the market and it's free.

Generally speaking, unless you are only doing very basic things you may need more than one tool to create your final vision. I would recommend something like Wax and Blender (If your after something very powerful and free)
